Has anyone heard about those "compensatory" picks?

I was just wondering. I haven't heard anything else about it since Tags mentioned the possibility of the Saints getting compensatory picks right after Katrina. Are we going to get them or was Tags just blowing more smoke up our asses? Also, what about that extra cap money for free agents? Anybody out there know anything?

If it is correct that the Packers have 5 picks, they should be in rounds 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. The 6th round pick was probably traded to New Orleans in the McKenzie-O'Sullivan deal, and the 7th round pick to Miami in the Brad Bedell trade.

Tagliabue has said the league's focus is to return the team to New Orleans, but league sources have said the franchise eventually could be moved to Los Angeles if New Orleans is unable to support the club. There have been reports that Saints owner Tom Benson favors keeping the team in San Antonio.

The league and the union have awarded Saints players $40,000 each from the NFL's fund for performance-based pay. Those bonuses are for enduring this season's hardships. Upshaw said that he and Tagliabue continue to consider other possible measures to help the Saints be competitive next season. Upshaw said it remains possible that the Saints could be awarded additional compensatory draft picks for players they lose in free agency, and free-agent players could be offered relocation bonuses and extra severance credit for signing with the Saints.

League officials say they hope to add some stability to the situation by announcing the Saints' schedule for the 2006 season next month, several months before other teams' schedules are announced.

Under terms of the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in a year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks.

The number of picks a team receives equals the net loss of compensatory free agents up to a maximum of four. The 32 compensatory choices announced will supplement the 229 choices in the regular seven rounds of the 2002 NFL Draft. This year, the compensatory picks will be positioned within the third through seventh rounds based on the value of the compensatory free agents lost.

Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. The formula was developed by the NFL Management Council. Not every free agent lost or signed by a club is covered by this formula.

Hey G, this is all I could find so far. I'm still looking.

Much appreciated Cherm. I'll keep looking too.

God, I hope we can get at least a 3rd rounder being we don't have one yet.

I say trade Brooks for a third if we can get it. Hell trade Brooks for a good kicker. Carney is gone. That way we don't have to use a draft pick on a kicker or sign one of those high priced free agents.

I only wish there was a team out there desperate enough to give us a 3rd rounder for Brooks.

Didn't we have pretty good kicker on our team during the preseason. What ever happened to him?

We may not know until the comp awards are announced. Last year it was at the end of March, if I remember correctly.
