Vitt to serve as Assistant Head Coach/Linebackers; Marrone tabbed as Offensive Coordinator/Offensive Line; Bonamego as Special Teams Coordinator

The New Orleans Saints have added three assistants to the coaching staff of Head Coach Sean Payton, including Joe Vitt as Assistant Head Coach/Linebackers; Doug Marrone as Offensive Coordinator/Offensive Line and John Bonamego as Special Teams Coordinator.

Joe Vitt comes to the Saints after serving as the Interim Head Coach of the St. Louis Rams in 2005. A 26-year NFL coaching veteran, Vitt took over as head coach six games into last season and led the Rams to 4-7 mark under his guidance. He entered last season as assistant head coach/linebackers for St. Louis, a position he was hired for after serving as linebackers coach for the Kansas City Chiefs from 2000-2004. Vitt was the defensive backs coach of the Green Bay Packers in 1999, where he worked with current Saints CB Mike McKenzie. From 1995-98, Vitt was linebackers coach for the Philadelphia Eagles. Vitt spent 10 seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, the final nine as defensive backs coach after beginning his tenure as defensive backs coach. He was assistant head coach/defensive backs coach from 1992-94 in his first stint with the Rams, and entered the NFL coaching ranks with the Baltimore Colts as strength coach from 1983-91.

Payton on Vitt:

"I worked with Joe at the Eagles and the one thing you can say is that his players always excel. Joe has a tremendous amount of NFL knowledge both coaching the position of linebacker as well as serving as a head coach in this league. That is an asset that we cannot overlook."

Doug Marrone, a former NFL offensive lineman who played the 1989 season with the Saints, enters his fifth year coaching in the NFL after spending the last four seasons with the New York Jets as Offensive Line Coach. In 2004 Marrone's group led the way for RB Curtis Martin to earn his first ever rushing title with 1,697 yards and helped the Jets offense finish third in the league in total rushing yards (2,388) and second in rushing first downs (135). He joined the Jets in 2002, after spending the 2001 season with the University of Tennessee, where he worked with the tight ends and offensive tackles. Marrone spent one season coaching the offensive line at the University of Georgia (2000) after spending five seasons (1995-99) with Georgia Tech. During his time with Georgia Tech, Marrone served as the director of football operations (1995), tight ends coach (1996) and offensive line coach (1997-99). He began his coaching career at Cortland (N.Y.) State as a tight ends coach in 1992 before serving one-year stints as the offensive line coach at The United States Coast Guard Academy (1993) and Northeastern University (1994). He was selected in the sixth round of the 1986 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Raiders, earning two accredited seasons in the NFL, one with the Miami Dolphins (1987) and the other with the Saints. He finished his professional career as a member of the London Monarchs of the World League (1991-92).

Payton on Marrone:

"Doug brings a wealth of experience from both the professional and collegiate level. His leadership and success coaching the offensive line position make him an excellent choice to serve as offensive coordinator. It will be important that Doug and I have a close working relationship and I am pleased he has decided to join our staff."

John Bonamego enters his eighth year in the NFL after a three-year stint with the Green Bay Packers as Special Teams Coordinator. He has spent the last 15 years tutoring special teams units, initially becoming an NFL assistant with Jacksonville in 1999. In 2005, the Packers surrendered an average of 21.6 yards on kickoff returns. In the two previous years, Green Bay was one of only five teams to rank in the top 10 in the annual comparison of special teams units by The Dallas Morning News. Bonamego joined the Packers after four seasons with the Jaguars (1999-2002), serving as the special teams coordinator in his final year in Green Bay. Bonamego was at Army from 1993-98, where he coached the outside linebackers in his first season and served as Special Teams/Recruiting Coordinator for his final five years.
