Saints hire four assistants

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The New Orleans Saints hired four new coaching assistants — quarterbacks coach Pete Carmichael Jr., defensive backs coach Tom Hayes, wide receivers coach Curtis Johnson and tight ends coach Terry Malone.




"We've worked hard to fill our coaching staff with assistants who know the game and have excelled at educating players on doing the little things that make a difference," said new head coach Sean Payton.

Carmichael spent the last four seasons with the San Diego Chargers as assistant wide receivers and quality control coach. Carmichael joined the Chargers after working in 2001 in a similar capacity with the Washington Redskins. In 2000, he was the tight ends coach and an offensive assistant with the Cleveland Browns.

Carmichael was the quarterbacks coach at Louisiana Tech from 1995-99, with his passers breaking almost every school record while he was with the Bulldogs.

Hayes was the defensive coordinator-secondary coach at Stanford last season. Hayes has over 30 years of coaching experience, including stints as defensive coordinator for UCLA, Oklahoma and Kansas. He also coached the secondary for the Washington Redskins for six years (1995-2000).

Johnson spent the past 10 years with Miami. He worked with wide receivers Andre Johnson, Reggie Wayne and Santana Moss, all now in the NFL.

Malone was the offensive coordinator and tight ends coach at Michigan for the last four years. It was part of a nine-year stint with the Wolverines, including coaching the offensive line from 1997-2001. In his first season at Michigan, the school won the national championship. In 2003-04, Malone's offensive unit finished second in the Big Ten.
