Report: Brees looking for $10 million per year

ESPN’s John Clayton reports free agent quarterback Drew Brees is reportedly seeking a contract that will pay him $10 million per year and is firm in those demands. The New Orleans Saints are the closest to meeting Brees' demands. The Miami Dolphins aren't offering as much in guarantees as New Orleans. The Dolphins seem are reluctant to go that with Brees coming off shoulder surgery.

As far as his shoulder is concerned, Brees said he has about another four or five months of recovery and doesn't anticipate any long-term effects. Brees tore the labrum and damaged the rotator cuff in his throwing shoulder in the Chargers' final game last season and underwent surgery Jan. 5.

Brees went 20-11 the past two seasons for San Diego, but when contract talks with the Chargers stalled, they agreed to let him test the market.

From Brees comments about the BOLTS, he appears to have burned the bridge back. Wanting $10 million a year and getting it is two different things.

The devil is in the details of the specific contract!

Brees' agent is just checking to see if our FO is dumb enough to bite. No way Miami offers that.

Now, I wouldn't mind seeing us pay that for him. Too much for Brees, though.

...well, I found out that Brady got an extension in 2002 after winning N.E.'s 1st Superbowl, worth $30,000,000 with only 4 mill up front... According to USA Today's database, his base salary from 2002 thru 2004 on average was less than 500,000 per, while getting couple mill in bonuese each tyear, but never more than 8 mil...

..the thing that is not started to tick me of is that some really good players have come and gone already.. just look at the Panthers... 2 very solid FA's at a reasonable price to fortify the lines, and these guys are chasing a very expensive question mark...

'Cause the simple man pays the thrills, the bills and the pills that kill

Just because he's asking for 10 mil doesn't mean he will or even expects to get it. It's like salary negotiation when you get a job offer. Why would you lowball yourself when they ask you what kind of salary you're looking for. Aiming higher is the smarter approach.

Brees is not worth the 6 mil with the question marks that our current QB is due to be paid. Not gaurenteed money any way. He has played well the past two years with out having superstar recieves (Gates at Tight end and LT being the exceptions, but they are not big time wide outs), but this was behind a solid offensive line. I believe prior to that he was labeled as a bust, granted the line was garbage.

Keep that in mind

...Aiming for more money than a guy who is younger than you, has 3 SB rings, and whose arm is attached to an intact shoulder, when you can't throw a football and your only claim to fame is a 12-4 season in 5 years and beating out a rookie (who supposedly is good) for the starting spot, is not smart, it's hillarious... even more hillarious is that someone is looking to sign him to that kind of cash...
