espn just reported that the jets have traded both of their first rounders to chicago to move up to the #4 pick in the draft, all the details aren't available yet but that changes everything

kiss our shot at newman goodbye, the jets take johnson if houston doesn't otherwise they take robertson and dallas takes newman

Wow ,its started already, this is going to be a wild draft.
Johnson will probably already be gone by this pick so one would think this is a move for Robertson. Wonder what the Pats are going to do now, they were the ones everyone thought was going to make this deal.

Yeah, the Patriots scare me now. I pray they don\'t pull a trade with Dallas, although if we were to trade with Arizona, it really wouldn\'t matter, cause Trufant would be there regardless.

I believe Rashean Mathis will be just as good as Marcus Trufant. I am hoping the saints trade down to get him ( Rashean Mathis and a late 2nd rd or 3rd rdpick )

Would be funny, and not completely out of the realm. But screw the Jets, it would not. Do you really think that a team would be dumb enough to trade up to the #4 a day before the draft, if they hadn\'t already covered every contingency? They plan on taking either Robertson or Johnson, I don\'t think they really care which, but they know they will get one of the two.
EDIT: I believe that the Saints and the Cardinals have a switch in place, if Trufant is still there at #6
EDIT #2: If no other trades occur in the top 4, the Cowboys have to be excited with this trade, as their #1 choice (Newman) will still be there at #5.

I agree Rod - I\'ve always subscribed to the theory that draftees are for the future, free agents are the ones who should make an immediate impact. That\'s not to say that a rookie can\'t make an impact, I just don\'t think it\'s wise to bet the farm for one guy who can be an impact player in his first year when you can get two who can grow into great players a few years down the line.

I still don\'t like the idea of moving up. Sitting still or moving down makes more sense to me. We got Stallworth and Grant with the 13 and 25 last year. While Stallworth seems like more of an immediate impact player, I\'d give the edge to Grant last season due to Stallworth\'s injury. Both will be stars on this team for years to come. I\'d rather have two more of those guys than one Deuce, given the number of holes we need to fill on Defense. Joseph, Peterson, Henderson, and Mathis should all still be around when we pick. Bailey may still even be on the board. If there\'s any credibility to this Smoot deal I say go after it hot and heavy.

WhoDat- this is not last years draft. These are not the same caliber that they were a year ago. Read my post from yesterday. http://www.blackandgold.net/site/mod...hread&tid=1345

Gator- If the Jets get screwed, I will bend over and kiss my own ass, and email you the picture. But math says they won\'t. :P

The Jets are not stupid....If dewayne robertson is gone....the jets would be just as thrill to pick andre johnson......remember they lost lavernus cole ;)

B&B, if the expert are right, chances are those high caliber player could be bust too ;)

Gator and B&B I get what you\'re saying, I just think it\'s a terrible idea to move up. A - the analysts are almost never right about the draft... but let\'s assume that they are. Let\'s say that after the first 12 picks the talent left is the equivalent of last year\'s second round, and all other rounds are shifted down accordingly. OK?

I\'d still rather have two LeCharles Bentley\'s and Keyo Craver over ONE Dante Stallworth. Hell, if we move down we may be able to get TWO Bentley\'s and TWO Cravers and a Smoot. That\'s MUCH better than one player. Especially on a defense like ours.

It\'s not like we\'re one or two players away from a Super Bowl guys. Our defense needs to get better everywhere. With our offense, our D just has to get better, not be the best in the league. Besides, \"talent\" is being used like its some undefinable theoretical idea. Think about the players.

Peterson, Henderson, Polamalu, and Mathis could all be ours if we stay put or move down the right way... that\'s with Smoot too. I\'ll take those FOUR guys (five if you count Smoot) over ONE Newman or Robertson ANY DAY.

Hadn\'t thought about the flexibility issue, it might accompany a trip to the hospital for me :P
I get what you are saying, WhoDat, it\'s just my belief that I would rather have one impact player on defense than two decent players and a guy that is going to take a couple of years ridding the bench.
The more I read about Henderson, the more he sounds like a Ruff cloan. I\'ve been listening to alot of various draft experts from all over talk on the radio how that the Cowboys would be stupid to trade down past two spots, even if they were to get two draft picks in return, because of the drop off in talent. They also pointed out that when you see safeties of this caliber being taken in the middle of the first, you know you have a weak draft. There are exceptions to this rule (Roy Williams), but they have to be exceptional players, which Williams was.

Rodjmaw, any player could potentially be a bust. Some less likely than others. But there is no such thing as a sure thing (Hello Akili Smith and Ryan Leaf)!

BlackandBlue 04-25-2003 02:33 PM

If the Cowboys stay put, it\'s real easy. If Newman is there, they will take him. If Newman is gone, but Robertson is there, they will take him. If they are both gone, that means that Johnson is still there, and they will take him (This is Galloway\'s final year of his contract and they will let him go next year). If they trade, things could get interesting- but I\'m betting they do not.

I understand your points also gentlemen... I\'m just wondering why you feel that way. Last year, we took Stallworth, Grant, Bentley, Allen, Craver... etc. and these were obviously not all first round picks. All COULD be starters this year and basically all but Craver are projected to be right now. I am the guy who has been yelling and screaming about impact players... I just think you get those through free agency and build through the draft.

To take a line from the late great Jim Finks - the draft is basically nothing more than a crap shoot. The odds of a high first rounder going bust (a la Leaf) is about the same as a sixth round pick becoming a Pro Bowler (a la Knight). My point is that these guys can get hurt, they can flop, they can decide they don\'t want to play football anymore or refuse to play for the Saints... etc. etc. etc. One player on defense isn\'t going to catapult this team to greatness. A lot of good players being groomed and taught to fit our particular system could help build a winner though. That\'s my only point. Strength in numbers. The odds of two first rounders both going bust is lesser than that of one first rounder going bust. Play the odds.

unless we can get into the top five to get our absolute top choice i say we don\'t trade up, we don\'t need impact players that badly
we need the guys we have to show up to EVERY game
we almost made the playoffs last year and if we had we would have done some damage
we had winning records against every playoff team but clev and atl
we have the pieces already, we need some depth, i don\'t thnk there is a player in the draft THAT WE HAVE A CHANCE OF GETTING that will make a big differance next year

not sad
it\'s a good thing
we just need to get our heart right and stay focused
it\'s only sad if we fall apart again

gator go back and read
i said there were no players THAT WE COULD GET that would make an immediate impact
we have no shot at newman unless he falls out of the top 5
don\'t tell me you think he will fall that far?????
trufant is solid but worth 2 first rounders?
he probably wouldn\'t even start

Gator your logic is so F-cked up it amazes me... ;)

You are adamantly opposed to paying established young impact players that we could pick up through free agency but you\'re all for giving away picks to move into the top ten where we\'ll have to give some draftee that may or may not ever pan out a huge contract. How does that make sense?

And I\'ll make you a bet too... contingent on the fact that the Saints do NOT trade up, I\'ll bet any player that they pick up in the first round will start on this team by mid season (unless they sign Faine and then Fontenot stays). Henderson will be able to play over Ruff. Peterson will start almost from the get go, so would Joseph, Mathis... etc. etc. etc.

PS - Gator - I just heard on ESPN that over 50% of first round picks fail to help the team that drafted them. If that\'s the case, you tell me what odds are better... one first round pick or two?

Dude, Gator, I don\'t know what\'s been up with you recently and why you keep coming after me, but chill it man. This is like the third time in a row when we disagreed and you came after me.

All I can say in response to your post is congratulations. You can read and report back what the \"analysts\", \"reporters\", and \"coaches\" say. That\'s a real talent man... you should be proud of it.

I don\'t come HERE to get my news. I can read what the \"experts\" say anywhere. I come here to voice my opinion and hear others\' opinions. I\'m not WRONG ever. Because I don\'t predict what the Saints are going to do. I will say what I think they SHOULD do or be doing. I love the Tebucky trade. I love the signing of Conwell. I like the deal that it looks like they\'re giving Horn. I don\'t like their treatment of Fontenot. I think this move they made in the draft was dumb. If you disagree fine, but stop coming after me. Seriously man, not cool.

A note to everyone. Gator and I are Gay. Our battles on this board usually come from our own lovers\' quarrles off of the computer. In fact, he\'s sitting right here next to me right now in his Jeff Garcia jersey listening to Madonna.

Hey Gator... I know dude. I usually wouldn\'t have been so quick to throw up the white flag. Just been stressed recently so I\'m not as inclined to battle it out. Still, I do think it\'s funny that your strategy for the draft is basically the exact opposite that you use during the rest of free agency! ;) That\'s what I love about you Gator... ;)

I will say this - we will probably agree on how to pay our draft picks... and that\'s cheaply. I\'m all for poor-mouthing these bastards and signing them to very small contracts, b/c as far as I can see, they may not be here in a few years.
