Another Saint in trouble

Last weekend wasn't a good one legally for the Saints.
A second New Orleans player, defensive end Jimmy Verdon, was arrested and jailed by Kenner police on Sunday morning and charged with three misdemeanors, including battery on a police officer with injury, Kenner police said Friday.

On Saturday morning, wide receiver Donté Stallworth was arrested and jailed in Miami Beach on charges of an expired tag on his 2005 Bentley and resisting arrest.

Verdon, a seventh-round draft pick from Arizona State who spent much of the season on the Saints' practice squad, was discovered by Kenner police at about 8:45 a.m. Sunday morning sleeping or unconscious in front of a Winn-Dixie supermarket in the 4000 block of Williams Boulevard, according to police spokesman Capt. James Gallagher.

"The officers went there to investigate and saw the guy sleeping in a chair in front of the store," Gallagher said. "When they shook him to wake him up, he jumped up and started fighting. They wrestled with him, ended up arresting him and charged him with battery on police, resisting an officer and disturbing the peace."

After being booked at the Kenner jail, Verdon was transferred to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office jail, standard operating procedure with state charges, according to Gallagher.

"He appeared to have been drinking," Gallagher said.

One of the officers involved in the arrest suffered a sprained wrist, Gallagher said, but returned to duty after being checked at a hospital.

Verdon's agent, Los Angeles-based Jack Scharf, refused to comment when contacted Friday.

The Saints, through spokesman Greg Bensel, said they were aware of the matter.

"Our security department is looking into it," Bensel said via e-mail. "Our policy is not to comment about incidents that are under investigation."

Gallagher said Verdon likely will be arraigned in First Parish Court, where he can enter a plea.

Verdon, 6 feet 3, 280 pounds, appeared in four games this past season after being signed to the active roster Dec. 12. He had one tackle.
