More Payton Comments

I have not noticed these posted elsewhere.

With his earlier "we are in the win now business" these to me show a philosophy of turning this thing around ASAP, not some visionary down the road plan.

Quote:

Sean Payton and the Saints control the early part of next month's draft. They are in a position of power in the No. 2 spot: After signing Drew Brees, they don't need a quarterback in a top-heavy QB draft.

The pick is for sale and potential buyers will start window shopping at the league meetings. The Saints' spot is where the Jets, picking fourth, have to jump if they want Matt Leinart. The Texans are locked in at No. 1 with Reggie Bush. The Titans, picking third, will take Leinart if he is still on the board. Vince Young, after an impressive private workout in Austin last week, is starting to move back up the board after the Wonderlic fiasco.

"I just don't want to be in this position three years from now," said Payton, the Saints' new head coach and the Giants offensive coordinator on their 2000 Super Bowl team. "We are going to take advantage of it now and move on."

Will the Saints move down? "You can only do that if the deal is something that makes sense and really benefits you," Payton said.

Now that the Jets have the 29th pick in the first round in the trade for John Abraham, it will be easier for them to give up their second-round pick, 35th overall, to move up two spots. Switching spots with the Jets is the safe move for the Saints, who likely want DE Mario Williams. Saints GM Mickey Loomis said he's not been approached by any team about trading the pick. "It's way too early for that," he said. "I know we will get some calls. We've never been a team that has shied away from trading up, trading down or taking the pick. We're interested in listening and hearing from everyone involved. I know we'll hear from teams."

Hello... You can only get that deal if other teams don't know the hand your holding. :?

Once again....the beauty of our situation is that IT DOESN'T MATTER if the teams know or have a pretty good idea of what we want to do. They just want our spot to get the jump on another team. The Jets can have wiretaps in our war room all they want. If we don't trade with them they won't get Matt Leinart, simple as that.

Gandhi, I don't think you are getting what Rush is trying to say.

What he is trying to say that any team - other than the Texans and maybe the Titans - that wants Matt Leinart will have to deal with the Saints, regardless what the Saints do.
Because the Saints signed Brees, it is believed that they are NOT going to pick Leinart.
Because Chow is in Tenn., and because McNair is getting up in age and is perpetually hurt, it is understood that the Titans will pick Leinart if he is available at the 3rd spot.
If any other team wants Leinart, they'd have to deal with the Saints first, to beat the Titans to the punch.

I'm with Gold on this one. If a team really wants Leinart they know which team to call. Every team knows we have a qb now so if we don't take him he'll be there for the Titans at #3. If the Jets, Raiders or any other team wants Leinart they know they aren't getting him unless they trade up with us. If anything, we know that any team trading up is looking at Leinart and we know he'll be gone by 3 at the latest, so I think that regardless of our situation and needs, we are in the drivers seat in negotiating a trade on draft day. If we don't get a good offer for a trade we still get the player we want (granted a little higher than preferred but we still get our targeted guy), if a team doesn't offer us a good deal, they do not get the player they want.

I heard on ESPN about a week ago that there is a chance that the Texans might pass on Bush, if so do we try and get him?

I thought I made this abundantly clear, but well put!! The fact that we are leaning towards D'Brick is irrelavent. THERE'S NO NEED FOR SMOKE SCREENS! Matt Leinart is the crown jewel that teams will trade up for. How does knowing who we intend to pick give any of our trade suitors an advantage? We pick D'Brick....Tennessee gets Leinart. We pick Hawk....Tenneseee gets Leinart. We pick Williams...Tennessee gets Leinart. So the only way any other team but Tennessee(trade suitors) can get Leinart is to trade with us. Signing Brees was one of the smartest things they could have done in relation to the draft. The only way this could be screwed up is if Reggie Bush is not taken number one, which might be an even BETTER situation to be in.

LTF, if Bush is there at #2, I say we run up and announce his name before the first pick has shaken hands with Tags. He would open up running and passing game, definately would take him at #2!
