The signing of unrestricted free-agent QB Drew Brees means much more to the Saints than just the on-the-field upgrade under center. We hear general manager Mickey Loomis has acknowledged that the Saints overpaid to lure Brees to the Big Easy, signing him to a six-year, $60 million deal. But Loomis, weÃƒÂ¢Ã¢Â‚Â¬Ã¢Â„Â¢re told, says it was worth every penny because Brees gives the Saints an ideal poster boy to market the franchise in their return to New Orleans and it shows the team can still land big-name free agents. Less than a week after adding Brees to the fold, the Saints signed free-agent LBs Scott Fujita and Anthony Simmons, RB Michael Bennett and S Omar Stoutmire. We hear the addition of Brees also gives the team flexibility in the draft. The Saints no longer need a quarterback with the No. 2 overall pick, so they can trade down, acquire more picks and address pressing needs on the offensive line and at linebacker.
