Bill Walsh on NFL Network... QB'ing 101

I was watching the NFL Network and they had this bit with Bill Walsh and Joe Montana, where Joe Montana went through some throws while Bill Walsh was explaining what was going on. After Bill explained the whole thing, and Montana went through the motions, they'd show the play during a game. I found myself getting upset all over again :) , watching Montana work his offense like clockwork.

But I bring this up, because the whole thing was about the 3-step drop, and how effective it is when used properly. You always hear people complaining about the QB not having any time ( yo, Jeebs, here's more tin foil :) ) to throw the ball, yet, when you look at Montana, he needed but 2 seconds to get rid of the ball, complete a 5 yarder, and have either Rice of Taylor make it an 80 yd TD.

The other point that Walsh drilled, was accuracy, and how a QB HAS to deliver the ball in front and at chest level of his receiver, because when the ball is not delivered in front, it breaks the receiver's stride, which makes the receiver slow down and get tackled immediately or not make the catch at all.

The 3rd pint that Walsh drilled, is the QB must not look at the receiver until he delivers the ball. Brady is really good at that too, and probably the closest thing to Montana since Montana retired.

Anyway, the point I am trying to make is that a good OC with a good QB doesn't need 10 seconds of no one coming near the QB to make plays. 3 steps and out is all it takes. So hopefully the Saints will be drafting AJ Hawk with the 5th pick in the draft :)

I've said it before and I'm sure I'll have to say it again... A good QB makes a mediocre O-line look good. It's just like you said, 2-3 seconds and the ball is out of his hands, amazing how good an O-line looks when the QB isn't getting sacked because he doesn't have the ball in his hands. Dan Marino was another QB that had a quick release.

Marino may have been the best pure passer ever and had the quickest release I've ever seen on a QB. Not taking anything from Montanna or elway for that matter.

All the more reason to secure a healthy, intelligent quarterback. Let me know when we've got one.

There will be two availible when we pick...Not sure on the intelligence of the third. Our head coach did go to one of the two's pro days. We'll see if we get one.
