Hey guys...just going off of some things I've heard in the Atl over the last couple of years.

Scott is the cousin of the 2 live stews, a radio show here in Atlanta. So, they have had him on alot over the last 2 years. Last year, he was an up and comer and they were having him on alot. They were talking future pro bowler and stuff. (I was just fuming that this guy came out of nowhere and was becoming a playmaker for my least favorite team.)

In '05, he essentially vanished in a pretty thin secondary (minus D Hall) He spent alot less time on the radio this past year

I don't know that this is as much a "starter" move as it is a depth move. He could be viewed as our third safety or some of the other speculation could be correct...D Smith to corner.

To me, the bigger part of this is unloading an overpriced turd from our o line. Next time you see Gandy holding, it will cost the Falcons yardage. The only problem is that he won't be on Vick's blindside.

I like the move. A safety with some potential who we shouldn't get overly excited about. Bye, bye Gandy. And maybe....hello Brick? This has been the smartest offseason in recent memory.

Scouting report on Scott:

Gets adequate depth when asked to drop into zone coverage and is fast enough to cover the deep half of the field. Possesses great top-end speed and has the second gear to recover once caught out of position. Plays with a mean streak, times hits well and punishes receivers going over the middle. Does a good job of getting hands into the receiver's frame, can jam tight ends at the line and muscles receivers out of their routes. Scott also played some corner at the collegiate level and he has some versatility but he lacks ideal man-to-man cover skills. Doesn't show great burst coming out of cuts and explosive slot receivers will have success creating separation working against him. Doesn't change speeds well and is vulnerable to double moves. Lacks ideal diagnose skills, doesn't read keys quickly enough and fails to get into position at times as a result.
Hmmmmm I don't know about this. Granted, the idea of solving our CB troubles this way by allowing Smith to go to CB opposite of MM is very appealing, but this guy sounds like he's awful in coverage. I like the fact that he's physically daunting back there and can lay the big hit, but I also don't like the fact that he seems to be prone to giving up the home run deep ball. Overall, I guess this could be a good chance for us. We still have Bellamy for depth and we also added Stoutmire. Not having to address CB in the draft if we really do move Smith to CB would allow us to focus on DT, LB, and OL. This could be very smart. Overall, this offseason has been one of the most "smoke and mirrors" types of offseasons I've seen in a long time. Signings that might have seemed like nothing now are starting to make sense....

Yas, I agree with the rest of your post, but not this. I think Gandy was a good player for us. Yes, he was old, but he was also smart, understood the schemes, and was a good lockerroom presence. He obviously wasn't a start at OT, but at least he was serviceable. I guess it's a good thing that we got rid of his cap number, but not much else is so positive about losing him.

O, and another thing to think about:

The Falcons this week had come very close to deals with Brad Hopkins, Torrin Tucker, and Todd Steussie. Now that they have Gandy, to replace Shaeffer, do they really need to get any of these guys? Maybe the Saints, especially with Payton and Gibbs coming from Dallas, will make a run at a guy they've been working with in Dallas the last few seasons.

I don't know, just something for ya, put it in your mouth, chew it, its delicious...

Interesting observation Duece on the dallas connection. If gandy was cheeper I'd keep him for the opionions noted above but for his cost, not as a backup.

I highly doubt anyone on here feels I have any trouble speaking my mind and being convicted about it. I can't be held responsible if someone doesn't have the mental capacity to weed out sarcasm when they see it.

IMO- This is a very strange move. Trading a starting LT to a division rival for a backup secondary player? Maybe moving Brown to LT or hope that Stinchcomb is recovered after ACL injury? Very interesting move, no idea what to make of this. IMO Gandy was probably has another season or two left. Does that mean the Saints are now drafting Brick? We'll see...
