The Times-Picayune reports in the Saints' first five minicamp practices, with RB Deuce McAllister sitting out as he continues to rehabilitate his surgically repaired knee, RB Michael Bennett has gotten the bulk of the repetitions as the team goes through its offensive paces. And what Bennett has displayed has, at times, been eye-opening, exhibiting a burst of speed expected out of a player who won Big Ten sprint titles indoors (60 meters, 200 meters) and outdoors (100 meters, 200 meters) while competing at Wisconsin. Utilizing a variety of swing passes and outside-the-tackle sweeps, Bennett has displayed the elusiveness and speed that earned him that Pro Bowl spot before injuries limited him to playing 16 games in his final three seasons in Minnesota. Bennett broke his foot in an offseason treadmill accident before the 2004 season, then sprained a knee in the 2004 exhibition season that required arthroscopic surgery. Last season with the Vikings, he began as the top back, was passed over for former Tulane RB Mewelde Moore, then forgotten as Minnesota's season spiraled out of control.

Thats what I like to here........

Just hope he can stay healthy, we will need him just in case duece not ready for the opener.

yeah i hope we have a thunder and lightning combo all season...

Just having Bennet may make the Deuce cut loose instead of tip-toeing through the line. Fear of losing his job may be the fire he needs.

A healthy Bennet could replace Deuce at the top of the depth chart. He's always been a very very good player, he just has a hard time staying on the field. I'm glad we have him though. I'd like to give him 10 touches a game every game this season.

You said it, duece is the MAN, but he did seem to dance a little to much at the line before he hit the hole

This was a very good pickup IMHO. Pittsburgh's Willie Parker proved all season long and in the Super Bowl what having a guy that can take to the house from any where on the field can do for your offense. It will be interesting to see how the Saints use him. I agree with the poster who said lets get him 10 carries a game. The one added dimension Brees will give us we haven't had in a while is the abillity to throw the screen pass. Bennett in screen situations could prove to be a deadly weapon for the Saints. Although Duece is fast once he gets going, he never really had that "burst" of speed you need. Bennett on the field in the one back set or on third down situations will give defenses fits. I've also wondered about having Duece and Bennett on the field at the same time in a split back formation...one of them would have to be covered by a linebacker for sure...can you see Bennett sprinting down the sideline with a LB chasing him? This also negates the need to draft a running back in the later rounds...definitely a good pickup if he can stay healthy

Bennett is the type of RB if healthy can do good things in the backfield, the knock on him as we all know is that he tends to stay injured, if that changes for him we'll have a very good #2 back and if needed a good replacement for D.M if unable to play for any reason due to injury.

taken from fox sports.....

Not all is well on the free agent front, however. New Orleans signed running back Michael Bennett away from the Vikings. Bennett provides insurance for Deuce McAllister, who's returning from a torn ACL. Realistically, however, Bennett just gives the Saints another injury-prone, overrated running back. Last year, according to DPAR, Bennett ranked 51st out of 53 backs with at least 75 rushes

just adding to that big, (if he can stay healthy) for you............smitty
