Why not Davis if we trade down.

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; Say Houston gets DBrick at 1 which makes the most sense and actually pass on Bush. The trade winds will be cat 5. Tenn will be out and sit at 3. That brings in a whole new twist to trading ...

That brings in a whole new twist to trading partners.
What if we go to 5 or 6 and davis is the best on the board. Would everyone be upset with davis as a pick? I would not. You get a TE/WR/HB/FB. great value for the dollar and the picks to boot.

Hagan, I think you're posing an interesting question.

Firstly, let me say that I agree with you in this: Davis is an elite talent. I don't think anyone would dispute that the guy is a great TE. He's incredibly fast, good hands, good routes, good YAC. Not so great at blocking, but could be an elite receiving TE in his rookie year.

The problem I have with this scenario is this: we have significant holes on both sides of the ball and this becomes something of a luxury pick.

The other problem I have is value. While I completely agree that Davis is an elite talent, I don't think he's more valuable than Williams, Hawk, Ferguson, or Bush.

I'll operate on your hypothetical. Let's say that Houston does the smart thing and takes Ferguson. At that point, the big question to us is whether Reggie Bush is too elite to pass up? (I'm not convinced that Payton would pass on Bush if he became available--we'd probably draft him) But if we were willing to trade, some team would probably be willing to give up their entire draft to get Bush. However, let's also assume that either the Titans or the Jets would be willing to trade for him. At that point I'm guessing we'd be facing this:
1. Houston--Ferguson
2. Jets--Bush
3. Titans--Leinart
4. Saints
I'm guessing this mainly because I don't think Payton wants to fall past the truly elite prospects, so no matter how badly Indy or Pittsburgh might want Bush, we won't trade into the last 1-5 picks of the first round. And I think the Jets would give up a lot to have Curtis Martin's replacement.

Then should we trade down again? The most likely situation to me is that the only guy left on the board who will command enough interest in a trade is Mario Williams. Again, I don't believe that Payton will want to drop out of contention for an elite talent. So I don't see him being willing to drop below 10 under any circumstances and he probably won't want to go past 7-8.

So now the board looks like this, with Williams, Hawk, Davis still on the board.
4. Saints
5. Packers
6. 49ers
7. Raiders
8. Bills

If we swap spots with the Packers, then they probably take Williams, but maybe Hawk. If we swap with the 49ers they probably take Davis, but maybe Hawk or Williams, Michael Huff would be a reach here. At any rate, I can't see us trading below the 49ers and having a good shot at landing Davis.

At the same time, I can't see a scenario where we would be able to take Davis where either Hawk, Williams, or Bush wouldn't also be there for us to take. When given the choice between several extra picks and my choice or Williams, Hawk or Davis, it just makes more sense to me to take Williams or Hawk before Davis. If we drop down to a place where both Hawk and Williams are off the board, then I don't know that Davis is a guarantee for us.

The biggest risk I see is that if we drop to 7, there is a good chance Davis won't be there anyway and we could be without Williams, Hawk or Davis.

Kudos though, it's an interesting problem to consider.

I don't think we should even consider this. Yes, he's an elite talent, but he's an elite talent at four positions:

TE/WR/HB/FB
that we are actually pretty strong at. We have a rising star in my opinion in Hilton. We have Joe and Donte. We have Deuce and Bennett. We have a very good FB in Karney. If we drafted this guy, in order to get him on the field, we'd have to sit Deuce or Joe or Donte or Hilton. Those guys are better on the field IMO. I'd rather see us get Hawk and let James Allen sit on the bench. Or draft Brick and let Stinch sit on the bench. Davis is good, but he doesn't belong on this team. We have entirely too many holes to fill.

Why not TE because we have Hilton,Conwell,Cambell(from Bufflao) we need no TE Hitlon in my opnion is on the rise, We defenatly need to address more need than TE like LB,CB,DT,and some special teamers !!! SO no on A TE in the draft.... no point

Michael Huff would be a reach here.
At 4, yes, but barely. He's also someone I would consider in that "elite" group of players, and you know how the league puts a premium on corners.

As far as Davis is concerned, if we traded down, and selected the guy, it wouldn't hurt my feelings. He would be an immediate upgrade, so I don't view it as a waste.

No way I would use a pick that high on a TE. The Tightends we have are ok, and I think with Brees, Hilton can be something special.

I'm all for drafting hawk, but this pick would not upset me. Brees would not have come close to a 60 million dollar deal without Gates. An elite TE gives you options

But he isn't an elite TE yet, and he's also a liability on blocking assignments.
