Strengths: Is tall with good overall size and frame to get bigger. Has very good straight-line speed for his size. Shows very good fluidity for his size. Is at his best in the passing game and could fit best as a 3-4 OLB in the NFL as a result. Possesses the athletic ability and speed to match up very well in man-coverage. Shows very good instincts and range in zone coverage. Has developed into an effective pass rusher. Has good speed and closing burst to the QB. Showed an improved array of pass rush moves as a senior. He has good speed and closing burst when pursuing the run. Takes solid angles and will wrap up in space. Has continued to improve with each year of experience and still has a good deal of untapped potential if he can improve his technique and lower-body strength when taking on blocks at the LOS vs. the run. He is a tough and instinctive player. Has great intelligence and picks schemes/assignments up quickly. A hard worker on and off the field. No character issues. Has versatility because of experience at SLB and DE. Also has been a playmaker on special teams. Has the physical tools and mental toughness to contribute in that capacity in the NFL.

Weaknesses: Lacks explosive upper body strength. Plays a bit too high versus the run and can will lose his leverage when taking on blocks. Needs to improve his technique when stacking versus the run. Allows blockers to get into his body too often. Is big but lacks ideal lower body strength. Plays with a little bit too narrow of a base. Needs to improve his hand-usage and ability to disengage from blocks. Also lacks explosiveness as a tackler. Durability is a short-term concern after ankle injury late in 2005 season.

Overall: Carpenter played in all 14 games as a true freshman in 2002. He played in all 13 games as a backup linebacker during his sophomore season in 2003, finishing with 37 tackles. As a junior in 2004, Carpenter finished with 93 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, three interceptions and two sacks. Carpenter started all 11 games that he played as a senior in 2005 and finished with 49 tackles, 10.5 TFL and eight sacks. He was unable to play in the Fiesta Bowl versus Notre Dame because of a broken ankle injury he suffered in the first quarter versus Michigan. Carpenter is a bit of an underrated prospect, largely because he has been overshadowed by teammate A.J. Hawk. Carpenter has a terrific size/speed combination. He is an intelligent, durable and physical player who shows great consistency on the football field. He has some experience playing at DE and he has the versatility to play SLB in a 4-3 and/or OLB in a 3-4 at the next level. Carpenter still has room to improve in terms of his efficiency when taking on blocks as well as a tackler. He also lacks explosive strength and will need to get stronger in order to anchor versus the run as a SLB in the NFL. However, he has a good deal of upside due to his versatility and size/speed combo. He can play a backup role at a couple of different LB positions early in his NFL career and he also is a proven playmaker on special teams, where he should be able to contribute right away. In our opinion, Carpenter is a good value late in the first or early in the second round of the 2006 draft.

Only concern is how bad the ankle is? Thats it. He will be a good deal if he goes as mock draft rank him. 20-25. I want all three OSU LBs; AJ, Bobby and Anthony Schlegel on the roter.

Strengths: His biggest strength is his tackling efficiency. He takes great angles and is a technically sound tackler that will get his head around the ball carrier and wrap up in space. He possesses adequate height, great bulk and is well-built. He has explosive power and is naturally strong. Plays with leverage, is thickly built and has very good lower body strength. He is disciplined, reads his keys well and won't make many mental errors. He's a downhill striker who fills hard and shows explosive initial pop at the POA. Does a very good job of taking on and disengaging from iso-blocks. Matches up very well in the phone booth. Shows good instincts on the blitz. Has been an effective pass rusher when turned loose. Is tough and relentless. A leader and high-character person with good intelligence and the mental capacity to pick schemes up quickly. Also has a great makeup for special teams in the NFL.

Weaknesses: Possesses marginal speed and below average athletic ability. He is stiff in the hips and loses too much in transition. Has decent range vs. the run in college and will be nothing more than a tackle-to-tackle run plugger in the NFL. He is too much of a straight-line player. Will have trouble adjusting in space vs. quicker and shiftier backs. He lacks ideal COD skills. Has limited range in zone coverage. Will be a liability vs. most NFL RB's man-to-man. Does not show good ball skills in coverage and has never been a big playmaker in that facet. Durability is a minor concern after offseason knee surgery prior to senior year (2005).

Overall: Schlegel began his collegiate career at Air Force. He started six of the 10 games that he played as a true freshman in 2001. He then finished with 116 tackles as a captain and fulltime starter during his sophomore season in 2002, earning first-team All-MWC honors. He transferred to Ohio State in 2003 and sat out that season due to NCAA transfer rules. He started eight of the 12 games he played in for the Buckeyes in 2004 and finished with 84 tackles, 10.5 TFL and 3.5 sacks. Schlegel started all 12 games as a senior in 2005 and finished second on the team with 82 tackles, including seven TFL and two sacks. Schlegel is a big, powerful, tough and aggressive middle linebacker prospect. He is an intelligent, disciplined and productive tackle-to-tackle run-plugger with outstanding tackling skills. However, Schlegel's lack of speed and athleticism really puts a low ceiling on his potential. He gets away with it at the collegiate level but he will have far less range versus the run in the NFL and he will be a liability in coverage. While he could possibly compete for a two-down role in the NFL, it's far more likely that Schlegel levels off as a backup ILB and special teams' contributor. Look for Schlegel to come off the 2006 draft board in the final two rounds.

I think 3/4 of all the draft sites are just fluff, all following one another. In January Carpenter was pegged as the second best LB overall and probably a mid first rounder. His stock has slipped to where many have Sims ahead of him and even a possible fall to the 2nd Rd. But has he changed that much really? Or is it all just the hype of the draft sites cottage industry? He still is a solid prospect when ever he goes. He doesn't look like a strong possibility for NO though IMO. Probably too low for the first pick and more than likely gone by #34.

That is how i see him though i give him a bit more credit against the pass. He has attitde and is a hitter. Will he be a starter probly not but he sure can plug the in the middle of the special teams in year one.

If he is there in 6 i would take him even though i do not see him lasting past 5.

we're talking about carpenter not hawk hagan. of 122 mock drafts he averages out at pick #17.81

I know. AJ, Bobby are my #1 AND #2 LB. I like Bobby better than Greenway. The ankle is the only concern and that is the only reason I see Chad rated equal to or just ahead ahead of him. Besides the fact we are compairing SLB and WLB here.
As for the other higher rated LB; Simms it is concussions. I would not touch him. there is only so many; where are you now, how many fingers do you see, a player must answer.

Just take the guy who overshadows, not the guy in the shadow. Go Hawk .

Nice post pak. I said several months ago, I wanted Bobby Carpenter if we couldn't get Hawk. Injury slowed him a little this year, but he's big & strong with great awareness. Early mocks had him going in the early second, but now he's projected a mid 1st.
