Common theme with all trade rumors?

I was just thinking about this. In the last few weeks I have heard trade rumors about Donte Stallworth, Dwight Smith, and Courtney Watson. I was wondering why we would consider trading these guys, especially considering that Donte and Dwight play key roles. Then I realized a common trend among all three of these guys: they have all had run-ins with the law in the past year. Dwight pulled a gun on somebody, Donte resisted arrest, and Watson got a DUI. Seems like Payton is trying to address character issues on this team?

Smoke screens in trade down options
Donte Stallworth - 15 - Broncos (from Falcons) - Chad Jackson WR and/or a 2/3 rounder replacement.
Dwight Smith - 7 - Raiders - Michael Huff DB
Courtney Watson - (2 - 5)- Mario Williams DE
No one wants Sully at the contract price. Unless it is one of those my garbage for yours type of trades.

I think it would be foolish to get rid of any of them. Watson I could see letting go maybe. But a starting reciever and safty? I just can't see it. Is payton just not expecting to do anything this year? Is he trying to get as many picks as possible to build for the next three years?

The city of New Orleans cannot afford to wait 3 years for a winning franchise.

I think it's a good theory that Payton just doesn't want someone foolish and careless enough to get into trouble with the law. It shows a lack of discipline and from what I've heard, Payton has a little bit of a thing for discipline.

I think it's more along the lines of they are Haz guys. Folks that, for one reason or another, Payton saw as reaches at the time of selection/signing.

Watson was a 2nd rounder and is getting lapped by 3rd and 4th rounders....Hell, Colby is about to take his spot. Stallworth is a 1st rounder who MAY just be touching the top of his potential, but could also be onthe slippery slope to good 3rd reciever.

Smith may just have the type of contract that makes him tradeable, unlike Sully's, who's contract is as bloated and cumbersome as he is.

Smith on the block?
<Apr. 24> Despite playing just one year in New Orleans, and having a very productive all-around campaign in 2005, Smith is being dangled by Saints officials in trade talks, according to ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli.
One of the teams showing some interest, ironically, is Tampa Bay, for whom Smith played the first four seasons of his career before signing with New Orleans as a free agent last spring. Tampa Bay has two solid young safeties in Jermaine Phillips and Will Allen, but the Bucs coaches still love the ballhawking Smith, a guy with a big-play mentality.

Smith has four seasons left on the contract he signed in New Orleans, and the first two years of the deal carry very palatable base salaries, $1.2 million in 2006 and 1.6 million in 2007.
From a discipline standpoint I could see why we would want to trade him, and I've trusted in everything that Payton has done so far, but trading Dwight Smith just does not make sense to me. He's our best player in the secondary. Right now our secondary is shaky because we don't have another corner back to compliment MM, and the only reason it's not in total shambles is because we have Dwight and Bullocks holding down the safety spots. Trading him will only make this team worse IMO.
