#34 PICK HAS TRADE VALUE
 

It is becoming more and more apparent that we will probably have to pick at #2 overall because this draft is so top heavy that teams seem content on sitting and waiting to see who falls to them. However, the #34 overall pick will have some value in this draft. Most experts believe that some great prospects could easily fall into the second round.

If we can't get a Mangold or Carpenter at #34, and we are stuck picking the best LB, CB, or DT that is left, why not look to trade down in the second round?

For instance, there are three teams that are expected to be active in the draft and have multiple picks between the second and third rounds: The Vikings, Patriots, and Chargers.

Using the trade chart, we could swap the #34 overall for: #48 and #83(Minn), #50 and #81(SD), and #52 and #75 (NE). SD and NE would be ideal partners because they already boast two of the deepest rosters in the NFL and could use specific starters to put them over the top.

The point is that we could still get our 3rd rounder back while not moving down more than 14 to 18 places in the second round. Most mock drafts are ALL OVER THE PLACE with picks 34 to 80. What do you guys think?

I see this also. Depending on what happens at 2 then we will find out how far we will drop. I hope to see us pick up a 4th rounder. ilove picking high there. but i doubt it involving the 34th pick

I do believe the strength of this draft is the breadth of quality from lower first to the third round. Not high impact players necessarily but solid potential starters. I would even give on the value to move out of the #2pick to add more.

Another idea is this... trade next year's first rounder for a high second rounder this year. Reasoning: expect team to be much better and thus draft position much lower in '07. Because of the depth this year a #32 to #50ish might be better this year than 10-15 picks higher next year... and you get the guy NOW

I do not want to give up that pick. There will still be some serious talent there at #34. If Mangold & Carpenter are gone, there will be guys like Abdul Hodge, Jonathon Joseph, Claude Wroten, Ko Simpson, Max Jeanne-Gilles, and on & on at #34 that won't be there later in the round. This is too valuable a pick to give up in this particular draft. Any other year, I would probably agree. Just not this year.

No way. If I am this team, I am holding on to that pick like grom death. Reason being, as high as I am on Brees' recovery, it is a possibility he may not be able to go. If he isn't, we will have another very bad year, and be picking high again. Brady Quinn will be available. There i no way a 3-13 team can afford to trade away a first for next year on the assumption they will be better. No way, no how.

I agree... we have to keep that pick next year, b/c we were a very disgusting team last year and unless we have the grace of god bestowed upon us this year, we aren't going to do much this year... brady quinn will be available and this guy is good... definitely in favor of having him under center for us, even if brees is here... true, there is a lot of talent this year, but no need to get short sighted now...

I agree Whodi. If Brees goes down (with the backups we have), we will have another miserable season. I do not want to trade away a possible (very, very possible) top 10 pick for any second rounder this year. :?

I do think the talent is here though. That is, to be at least like the previous 32-32 run before last season. A good nucleus with a real coach and it can happen. Remember the Bears and Bucs were picking #4 and #5 this time last year and went on to win division crowns. Miami was in our spot and went to 9-7.

None of them traded a first round pick in the following year though. That's just a bad idea. Sorry man. I was with you up until then. That's just not a risk we could take. Also, Miami, the Bears and the Bucs ALL had more talent than we had. Far more. All three had killer defenses. Miami got faded cause Ricky jumped ship on them right before the season. The bucs offense was going to tatters with no running game. And the Bears had injuries unleashed upon them. Plus they were all GOOD and had a down year. We have been mediocre then dropped to terrible. There;s not enough good seasons behind us yet to make a move like that. If we had been in the playoffs the year before, maybe. But we have too small a margin of error not to be 3-13 again for us to part with that pick.
