Saints coy about No. 2 pick

The New Orleans Saints hold the No. 2 pick in Saturday's NFL Draft. But the team has given little indication what it will do with the pick.

Will the Saints try to trade down in the draft and pick up either additional picks or veteran players?

Will the team take Ohio State linebacker A. J. Hawk and try to build around him?

Will the team take Virginia offensive tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson and build the offensive line around him?

Or do the Saints throw everyone a curve and take Southern Cal quarterback Matt Leinart even thought New Orleans signed free agent Drew Brees in the offseason?

"I think they are doing a good job for keeping (to themselves) everything which they would love to do," NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock said. "If they stay at No. 2, I don't believe it will be a quarterback."

That would eliminate Leinart.

But first the trade possibilities.

The Saints currently own just two picks in the first three rounds. A trade of the No. 2 pick could bolster that number.

The Saints might trade down if they feel confident in what they could get later in the draft.

"That's always attractive if the place you're trading down to you feel like you can get one of the players you greatly desire," Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said.

If the Saints stand pat, Ferguson, Hawk and N.C. State defensive end Mario Williams would figure into the team's plans. All three took visits to New Orleans to meet with Saints personnel as did Leinart and Maryland tight end Vernon Davis.

"I believe it will either be Mario Williams or D'Brickashaw Ferguson," Mayock said. "My belief (is) on Williams even though they already have two good defensive ends."

If Hawk is as good as everybody says and thinks he is, why are we having a pay issue with taking him 2nd when Green Bay will take him 4th? I havenot done that much research but I have read too many blurbs here from y'all that Hawk is the solid pick.

HALO...make a call to the front office and tell them we are going with AJ.

I know you got some stroke around there.

GO SAINTS GO YOU FUDPUCKERS!!!!!!!!!!!

Cash value for postion in the draft for the top 10 picks. has any one ever seen a G or C go in the top 5 much less the top 10? i think not?
I think it has to do with what franchised players get paid. the average salary for top players at the same position. That is a good guide. Investors guide to being an NFL owner. It has nothing to do with winning. Look at NE they do NOT use it. they put in the bathroom for back up toliet paper.
Myself I think guide is good for starting a camp fire, cook my weenie and make a smore. But New England my have the better idea.
what do you think?

I agree, it shouldn't matter if we have to pay a little more for picking Hawk with the second pick. If he is going to be a franchise player and the poster boy for the defense, then it shouldn't matter where he is picked at.

It's not really about the money I don't think. It's more about that no other team will pick him, so why not get some extra picks, still get Hawk, and pay him a little less? I wouldn't care even if we paid him # two money, if we trade down some and get more picks. But your right, he would be a poster boy for us.

I think to get him later it would take getting the jets pick at #4, and it doesn't seem that they want to trade with us for the second pick. The packers are likely to take him at number 5, so trading down to the raiders spot at #7 wont do us any good as far picking Hawk goes. But if the Packers take Mario or Vernon Davis then we would be alright, because the jets would probably take D'Brick or Mario at #4.

RE: Re: RE: Saints coy about No. 2 pick

the reason they won't pick hawk at two is all dollars and cents... the guaranteed money at #2 is a lot more than what is traditionally paid to linebackers, no matter how good they are.... personally, i feel that you are going to have to pay the #2 pick all that money anyway so why not go ahead and draft the person you think will make the biggest improvement to your team right away regardless of the position they play (except for maybe kickers and punters).... that being said and knowing hawk will be a great, great player, i still feel the best bet for this year's draft is ferguson
