Saints First Day (So Far)

First off, Reggie Bush is a great talent. Who knows if he is truly a "once in a generation" runningback as I've heard. I don't hate the Saints first pick. I don't like it either.

Do I really need to bring up the second round? Trading down so far and missing out on some good prospects only to pick up a guy that was projected to perhaps be a second day pick. And he's a Safety?

Bad draft so far. I've tried to keep my expectations low for this but it was too hard.

Hopefully Faine will stay healthy and make up for this somehow.

I don't understand the safety pick at all but it seems like Faine is, in effect, our second round pick. I like that and think it's pretty savy.

We started off well. We got the best player in the draft, then traded down and got a starting center. Good lbs, dbs, ots, and dts were available and we were going to fill another need. Then we chose Roman Harper, a safety. If we would have taken hodge, youboty, mcneil, winston, watson, or wroten I would have been so happy. But picking a safety that was rated by many to be a 3-4 round prospect hurt. Regardless of the Harper pick, I'm happy to have REGGIE as a Saint. In the end, while I disagree with the other moves, getting Bush made my day.

I agree. I thought that we couldn't mess this draft up. Well, we did.

I think that bush dropping in our laps changed everything. I don't think it was the right choice for us but you can't pass on him either. Look what the Jets did... exactly what I wanted the Saints to do... Brick and Mangold.

You said what I was going to post down to the players I wanted at that pick. Why in the hell are we so hard up for safetys?

I thought the Faine move was awesome. Pick up a young starter and only move down 9 spots. Hodge is there. The others are there. Well, no, we need another safety to go with the other 15 we have. We HAVE two good starters in Smith and Bullocks. WTF, Peyton?????

Some of you simply have unrealistic expectations. A lot expected the Saints to be able to trade down and pick up 3 1st rounders, 5 seconds, 2 thirds and 5 4ths. And I SAW the posts....unreal. That's a bit of an exaggeration but some people thought we were just going to rack up picks. What happened is that teams tried to lowball the Saints in regards to Bush and they didn't budge, which is GOOD in case you guys didn't know. We made our team better guys. I didn't get the Roman Harper pick at first but it looks as if they plan to move Dwight Smith to CB, which effictively makes our CB corps better. We still have 5 more rounds to go and you guys are spelling doom for our team already.

After picking Reggie Bush, I am certain that there are a select few folks that will NEVER be satisfied with anything the Saints do in regard to the draft. Most of the community is thrilled with this pick, yet there are the typical sourpusses hanging around.

I think you are miss reading things. I don't think anyone is disappointed with the Bush pick, however if a trade went down they would be ok with that as well to snag a few extra picks which apparently other seem to think we have more wholes to fill than at RB... hello. I don't think it was horrible the draft so far but we could have done better.

LivnaLieTimay 04-29-2006 05:55 PM

I'm with you Gold. No doubt the Harper pick left me scratching my head but we got the best player in the draft and a starting center. Now with Harper, I really got the same feeling as Gold, that we will move Smith to CB. This gives us Smith and McKenzie as CB's and we got Bullocks as one safety, and we can figure out who we want as the other. Plus I'm sure we'll let one of our safeties go. I would have rather had some other guys as opposed to Harper and it frustrating that we could have had an amazing day, but by no means am I dissapointed. We have made our team better and I am very happy to see Reggie coming to NO. Reggie Bush is an amazing talent and is going to do so much for our team. Everyone out there that is ripping our team has to realize we still have a couple more picks left and with Bush, that could make us a little more attractive to any remaining free agents. REG-GIE, REG-GIE, REG-GIE!!!

Euphoria 04-29-2006 06:01 PM

no one is ripping the team just looking at other options.

Hmmmm I'm not getting that vibe from some people. In all honestly I expected a trade with the Jets and would have preferred it but as I have said for weeks now we can't MAKE people give us a good deal for our pick. I fully expected the interested teams to lowball us and they did, so I am happy to be in the spot we are in and glad we didn't cave in. I am also glad to see that Benson isn't being cheap and has told Loomis to pay Bush and get him signed quick. These are all things that we should be excited about. I think we ALL know that we had multiple holes to fill but we did the best with the cards that we were dealt.

Euphoria 04-29-2006 06:09 PM

sure get excited but the real question is... "Did we get better"?

Not excited....cautiously optimistic. And yes I do think we are a better team than we were yesterday.

I'm not saying everyone has to be yippety yippetty yay all the time but geez...

I have to wonder...do you even enjoy being a football fan??? It seems that you live in depression and pessimism and you are in constant pain.

JimBone 04-29-2006 06:29 PM

We most definitely got better...Reggie Bush is now our 3rd receiver, kick returner and backup running back. Jeff Faine strengthens the line and allows us to have depth with Nesbit and Goodwin on the bench. The Harper pick allows us to move Smith to corner and gives us depth at safety with Scott, Bullocks, Bellamy, and Stoutmire. So really, we may have boosted our CB's, S, OL, RB, and WR with only 2 picks...to me it could be a great day of work...or it could all be crap.

iceshack149 04-29-2006 06:47 PM

Good post JB. Glad to see you back on the board by the way.

It seems to me that the new regime is really focusing on special teams and I'm fine with that. Special teams is by far the most underrated 1/3 of the three units in football. It will get your offense closer to the endzone and give your defense more field to preserve.

Or maybe I'm just trying to ease the pain..
