ESPN Insider

Kiper:

New Orleans Saints: GRADE: C
The Saints got the top player on the board in running back Reggie Bush, but I don't understand the pick of safety Roman Harper in the second round when they needed help at cornerback and linebacker. They didn't take a linebacker, and they waited until the sixth round to get a corner (Josh Lay of Pittsburgh). I do like guard Zach Strief in the seventh round, especially since he could have gone as high as the third round.

Scouts Inc:

43. New Orleans Saints
The pick: Roman Harper, DS, Alabama
Scouts take: Taking Harper here isn't a good move. The Saints have far greater needs, and Harper doesn't have great upside. Though he is smart and plays with a non-stop motor, he doesn't have great athletic ability or size. If New Orleans wants to start grooming a possible replacement for the inconsistent and aging Jay Bellamy, drafting a safety with more potential would have made more sense.

Inside the sixth round
In recent history, New Orleans has placed a greater emphasis on speed and upside than it has on technique and consistency when it comes to drafting receivers. The result has predictably been a talented but inconsistent receiving corps and it's clearly time to shift gears. Oregon State WR Mike Haas' (No. 171) potential is limited by his lack of ideal speed and elusiveness but he isn't afraid to go over the middle and rarely drops balls that he should catch. He should develop into a reliable sub-package possession receiver and possibly an adequate No. 2.

• The Saints quietly got one of the better late-round values in Northwestern offensive tackle/guard prospect Zach Strief with the second selection in the seventh round. Strief was considered by many teams as a possible fourth-to-fifth round prospect because of his strength and toughness. He lacks athleticism, which is why he may fit better inside at the guard position in the NFL. But don't be surprised if Strief winds up developing into a starter for the Saints in the future and giving them more production than their fourth-round pick, Bloomsburg OG Jahri Evans.

You know, screw espn insider. a bunch of so call experts that don't know sh@t. The Saints had better than a C grade, it was almost an A.

Yeah... these so called grades, what are they based on they don't specify. I mean are they based on needs or are they based on who was drafted reguardless of needs?

Its always funny looking at these grades....as if they really mean anything. Your grade from the "experts" doesn't translate into wins on the field. Teams can get an "A" and still end up drafting in the top 5 next year, while a team with a "C" is holding up the Lombardi trophy. What matters is how the players develop and fit into the team concept.

Kiper had 0 A's and 0 D's and F's.

Thats how much I invest in him. No one had an excellent draft for an A and no one was poor enogh for a D or F.

Go to hell Mel Kiper.

I like Mel, but it seems a little unrealistic that nobody got an A in this draft. Not saying that we deserve an A, because we don't, but I think we might be a little lower than where it should be.
