Facts and Thoughts on The Draft

Didja hear it floated around that in the past 13 years or something out of all defensive lineman picked in the first round only one has made the ProBowl one time? Again I say that it is a double blessing: not only getting spectacular Reggie but not facing the big downside risk of Mario.

It seems more and more players are being drafted specifically for special teams roles. Not just that but all sorts of situational roles. Ninkovich for example does not project as a complete player but is a good edge rusher, long snapper, and special teamer.

In the past 3 years over 150 undrafted free agents have made teams. There were some excellent signings this week. Do not be surprised to see more than one make the team.

In the first two rounds, 13 players who could possibly play CB were drafted. That certainly shrinks the market further for Ty Law. I do not know if he meets the character parameters of the new regime but I sure would like to see him signed. It would be another added dramatic positive splash to a franchise that was withering long before Katrina hit.

I heard Ty Law was caught jay walking as a 6 year old, so Payton's not interested.

I think the Quality out wieghs the issues here. he has been pretty good since NE let him leave. maybe it was a wake up call for him. still would be big money though. Plummer would have been cheaper but he is by no means the same quality. Remeber the 49ers fan nick named him the toast

With 13 potential CB spots filled with 1/2 rd draft picks he loses a lot of supply/demand leverage. He turned 32 in February, the contracts don't grow bigger as you age past 30. He's gotta see the reality of how Poston's other clients missed the bigger money too. Everyone wants to play in NOLA now, hehe. Come on Mickey bring him in for a sit down anyway.

Bentley was a badass... but still... when I reviewed the comparitive numbers-

Bentley- $12.5 million in guaranteed money up front and averages $6 million per year.

Faine- signed through 2009 base salaries: $538,750 (2006), $701,250 (2007), $863,750 (2008) and $1.026 million (2009).

If the former first round pick can just stay healthy (the knock on him) then he ceratinly should be able to be a good value guy to have around.

9 draft spots is a pretty cheap acquisition fee.

This cant be true. I think its a grammar mistake. I think its all defensive players drafted first overall. Off the top of my head Im thinking Jevon Kearse, Julius Peppers and Dwight Freeney were all first round picks who made the pro bowl.

Maybe we could sign him for a few years to mentor his cousin whom we drafted in the 6th round (Josh Lay). Together, they could be "Lay"in' down the "Law" in our secondary.
