Today's #5 News

Quote:

Ornstein says Bush — who will indeed wear No. 5 when he practices for the first time with the Saints at a weekend minicamp — is so serious about not parting with the number that he will pledge 25% of his proceeds from jersey sales to Katrina relief.

Players get 6% of the amount for each jersey sold, which, according to Ornstein, netted No. 1-ranked Randy Moss and other top sellers more than $1.5 million each last year.

If Bush's shirts are similarly hot, the Katrina donation could be in the $400,000 range.

The NFL likely will not make a specific exemption allowing Bush to wear his college jersey No. 5 in the NFL. But the league's jersey numbering system is on the competition committee's agenda, according to league spokesman Greg Aiello.

RE: Today

Just give the guy his number already. Like I said in another post.....The guy is synonymous with the number 5, just like Jordan was synonymous with the number 23.

Everyone i have heard comment on the situation thinks the NFL would be silly if it didnt allow Bush to wear 5...time for the NFL to loosen up a bit if you ask me.

spkb25 05-12-2006 07:41 PM

yeah yeah hurry up and let the king wear his crown so i can order his jersey

smyce 05-12-2006 07:46 PM

I think his jersey will be the top seller regardless, but I also think more jerseys will be sold with the #5.

I like the NFL rules regarding jersey numbers, but either way I'd be happy.

I have a feeling Bush is going to donate a ton of money to Katrina relief anyway. He seems to be that kinda guy.

JimBone 05-12-2006 08:11 PM

I agree...i dont particularly care which way the ruling goes...i just want to know what number he is going to be...

CHACHING 05-13-2006 12:27 PM

Bush=5..period
anything else would be uncivilized...

pakowitz 05-13-2006 04:08 PM

he said he would donate 25% of the money he gets from jersey sales to hurricane relief efforts...

NFL | Competition committee discussing rule change regarding numbers
Sat, 13 May 2006 12:18:03 -0700

Mike Triplett, of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, reports the NFL's competition committee discussed a possible rule change regarding uniform numbers during a conference call Friday, May 12, and will report on the issue to all 32 teams during the league meetings later this month, according to NFL spokesman Greg Aiello. New Orleans Saints RB Reggie Bush has asked for permission to wear his college No. 5, but running backs are restricted to numbers in the 20s, 30s or 40s. Two-thirds of the NFL's 32 owners would need to approve in order for the rule to be changed.
