BIO: Garden City Junior College transfer used at both QB and safety last season. Completed 55.6 percent of his throws for 1,334 yards with seven TDs and 10 INTs and also led the team on the ground posting 160-655-4. Collected 10 tackles after seeing duty late in the season in the secondary. Used in a backup role at QB the prior season, throwing only 24 passes yet producing 59-313-1 as a ball carrier. Will be 27 years old when the season roles around next September.

POSITIVES: Athletic prospect still learning to become a football player. At QB displays a nice arm and the ability to make the deep pass, laying the ball in front of receivers and letting them run to it. Strong running the ball, breaks tackles and picks up a lot of yardage off initial contact. Flashed skill late in the year as a defensive back as a hard hitting safety who kept the play in front of him and flew around the ball.

NEGATIVES: Does not see the field or find the safety as a passer and throws off his back foot. Hesitant in the backfield reacting to the pass and much better versus the run.

ANALYSIS: Needs a lot of time and age is a problem. Looks like a prospect at strong safety or even running back but must make a quick impression.

First Wave Of Cuts Produce No Real Surprises
August 26, 2006


There are still four more names to move off the current roster between now and Tuesday at 4 p.m., and it's likely the Eagles will decide at that time to officially place the likes of Adrien Clarke and Greg Richmond and Jason Davis on the Injured Reserve list.
The roster must be pared to 75 players by then, but it's a mere technicality. The work has been done.

The Eagles released 11 players on Saturday to trim the numbers, and that first wave of cuts was fairly expected all along. There were no shockers on the list.

Veteran Ed Jasper was signed in the off-season to bolster depth at defensive tackle, and then the Eagles drafted Brodrick Bunkley and LaJuan Ramsey and, all of a sudden, defensive tackle was loaded.

Jasper was a simple choice. You could see it from the first day of training camp. The kids -- including Keyonta Marshall -- just had more bounce, more sizzle.

And Jasper now looks for a job, which he should find quite easily.

One thing about the players who were released: They all deserve respect. They worked hard in the spring camps and through the training camp heat and now through four games of the preseason. They're all excellent athletes and very good football players.

They just aren't good enough to make this team.

Wide receiver Carl Ford, for example, was a kid whom the Eagles claimed off of waivers last season. The Eagles liked his quick feet and wanted to get him to Philadelphia, get him into the scheme and see what he could do.

And what they saw was a pretty good receiver, a young man who got into and out of his routes quickly, who caught the ball well and who was tough.

But the roster logjam here didn't give Ford much of a chance to peek his head through to see the sunshine. And now he's in the uncomfortable position of trying to find a new home, a paycheck.


Second-year man OT Calvin Armstrong was one of the surprises of last year's training camp. He made the team as a sixth-round draft pick and offered a thoughtful, detailed perspective on his situation. Armstrong is a big, strong kid who has already developed a great deal in a year's time, but the Eagles found a diamond in the rough in the undrafted Pat McCoy, and he is now in position to take Armstrong's job as the fourth offensive tackle on this team.

This is how you improve the roster from one year to the next. You challenge the bottom of the roster with draft picks and after-draft signings, and then you see what you have.

In McCoy, the Eagles have a young prospect. In Armstrong, they had a player who was just a cut below.

For those "fringe," players who survived this cut, the reward is a game on Friday night against the Jets. If history holds true, Andy Reid will sit many of his regulars and turn the game over to the "bubble" Eagles.

If nothing else, many of those players will have 60 minutes of tape for all of the 31 other teams to watch and study.

This is a cruel business, indeed. On Friday night many of these young guys were dressed and on the sidelines of the nationally-televised game. What a thrill! Friends and family back home could watch them with pride and envy.

Now? They are available for hire, waiting for the phone to ring.

The New York Jets announced LB Mondoe Davis has been waived from the team.

Former University of Delaware standout Mondoe Davis had an outstanding game on special teams and snared an interception while playing linebacker for the New York Jets in a 10-3 preseason victory over the Detroit Lions last Friday, Aug. 12.

Davis, who also had two tackles in the game, was singled out by Jets Head Coach Herman Edwards. "He's a tough guy. Fast. Smart," Edwards told the Newark (N.J.) Star-Ledger in a profile on the former Fightin’ Blue Hen. "He did a great job on special teams and made the big play on the tipped ball. He likes football. Has great energy. Asks great questions. You like those kind of guys."

A player that may not be the greatest athlete but boy does he have a motor, I mean he never gives up on a play, he is the consummate ball player
He also may not have the ideal size for the inside interior area, but he is tough, holds up well inside against the rush, and often disrupts the opposing teams running game
He also brings a consistent rush up the middle on the opposing quarterback , which disrupts a quarterbacks throwing lanes and gives them the impression that the pocket is collapsing around them
You can often find this defensive lineman helping on a tackle down field 20 yards or more, and he will pursue the ball from sideline to sideline
I would like to see him gain another 20lbs or so to help him hold up against the NFL competition he will be competing with on a every down basis
As for his draft status, I feel the (6th RD) would be good value, mainly due to his lack of ideal size for the scouts, I also could see him as a non-drafted player, if that is the case some lucky team will really make out!

POSITIVES: Big, nasty blocker best in confined quarters. Strong at the point, gets movement from run blocks and seals defenders from the action. Patient in pass protection, jolts opponents with hand punch and effectively uses angles. Rarely gives up an inch of room and works hard to annihilate opponents.

NEGATIVES: Ineffective in space, lacks lateral blocking range and has trouble in motion. Stiff, which hurts his ability to finish blocks.

ANALYSIS: A solid prospect on the right side, Toeaina has the skills for a power running offense. A likely backup who can see action as a spot starter at the next level.

In 2004, Harrison Smith made a name for himself. Prior to his junior season, he was solid, but really did not make too many plays. Things changed as a junior when he finished the season with 31 tackles to go along with 18 pass breakups. Smith wasn't as big of a factor on the ball this year, but he was more active all over the field. He finished his senior season with 61 tackles, three for loss, one sack, and two interceptions.

Smith has excellent size for the corner position. He is tall and lanky, and can match up with bigger receivers well. He will not back down from any receiver, and loves to get in your face and hit you. Whether he's back in coverage, or coming up to support the run, he is always around the action. He comes to the ball to make plays instead of letting things happen.

Harrison may be a tweener at the next level. He has played corner, but may lack the standout athleticism and speed to project there at the next level. He has the frame and toughness to play safety, but does not have enough experience there. As a safety, he will also need to bulk up more to be more prepared for the physical style of play. Even though he has broken up a lot of passes, he has not come up with very many interceptions in his career, and that is a worry.

Harrison Smith may have some doubt around what position he is best suited for at the next level. If he can test out well athletically, teams will give him first crack at corner because of his size at that position. If not, he still has a chance to make it as a safety. He could be a very good free safety at the next level if given time to adjust to the position. With his aggressiveness and size, he will find a place in the NFL.
