Rams | Alford Released
Sat, 3 Sep 2005 18:33:42 -0700

Jim Thomas, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports the St. Louis Rams have released OL Darnell Alford.

Is reported to have signed with the saints by fox sports.

Quick Bio.

Big, powerful player…moves feet well…deceptive quickness for size…powerful punch…signed by Rams 9/8/04 after spending preseason with Kansas City...spent part of four season on Chiefs’ active roster and practice squad...spent time on Dallas’ and New York Jets’ active roster in 2002 after playing for the Berlin Thunder in NFL Europe…originally entered league as sixth-round draft choice (188th overall) by Kansas City in 2000 NFL Draft.

2004: Spent preseason and training camp with Kansas City…signed by Rams 9/8 and spent entire season on active roster…deactivated for 14 contests, and did not play in two…deactivated for NFC Wildcard Game at Seattle 1/8/05 and did not play in NFC Divisional Playoff Game at Atlanta 1/15/05.

2003: Spent entire season on Chiefs’ practice squad after spending offseason and training camp in Kansas City.

2002: Spent training camp with Kansas City...signed to Jets’ active roster 9/9 after spending one week on Green Bay’s practice squad…played in two contests, inactive for seven with Jets…claimed off waivers by Dallas 11/19…inactive for three contests with Cowboys before being released 12/11…spent final three weeks of season on Chiefs’ active roster, deactivated for all three contests.

2001: Played in two games for Chiefs…inactive for first nine contests, saw special teams action vs. Seattle 11/25 and vs. Philadelphia 11/29, and was inactive for final five games.

2000: Played in one game, did not play in four, for Chiefs as rookie...saw action at left guard vs. Carolina 12/10.

Pre Draft 2000
Darnell Alford | OT | Boston College | Big East
Selected by Kansas City Chiefs in round 6, pick 19 (#188 overall)
Ht Wt 40 BP SS LS VJ BJ Grade
6'4" 334 5.55 23 5.02 25 7'10" 7.35
A big right tackle with solid legs and a soft yet thick upper body. Not quick off the ball, but has the power to drive block well. Athletic for his size but doesn't adjust well upfield. Erratic pass protector. Extends his arms aggressively but is inconsistent with hand placement. Shows the agility to slide his feet yet bends at the waist too often when redirecting. Can anchor strong, but gets too upright at times. Not a nasty finisher. Intelligent. Has the tools to be a quality player, but needs a lot of technique refinement. Could project to guard.

Okay lets see what he can do. looks to be a third option guy to me? Or is he ready to step up? this is another G/T guy we have brought in ( Adam Meadows to vist). could J. Evans be a bigger project than we thought. He could need a full year to catch up with game after Div. II.

I'm curious to know who didn't think a late round pick like Evans was a big project?

a whole year inactive is what you guys thought? I was hoping for some spot duty and on the job training. Off to the practice sqaud for him. that suxes. Guess I am stupid and say I would expect him to see the field as a fourth round pick. If we do sign another OL this year I would call him a wasted fourth round pick. I would expect a pick in 6, 7 or UFA to do that tour.
6 Hass, Mike WR Ore.St
6 Lay, Josh CB Pitt
7 Strief, Zach G NW
7 Colston, M. TE Hfstra
were we drafted in the fourth round we should have gotten a player that should have gone on the first day that some how fell to day two of the draft. Even with the trade. So this was a giant reach in your eyes for the saints. Well I did not think it was that big of one. There is only so many OL we can have. unless we are cutting veterans or proven backups. I do not see them getting cut. we do not have the talent here.
Holland, Montrae G 6-2 322
Mayberry, Jermane G 6-4 325
Hoffmann, Augie G 6-2 315
Setterstrom, Chad G 6-3 310
Nesbit, Jamar G 6-4 328
Ledford, Dwayne G 6-4 300
Darnell Alford G 6-4 334
Evans, Jahri G 6-4 318 22
As much as I was diappointed by Mayberry I do not see us dumping him. to much money in the back field for that. who is getting dumped then?
