Trade the 4th we got for Bennett and get this guy in camp immediately. Our LB's suck and this guy is a killer.

McNair was had for a fourth. He is no steve McNair.
He is making good money now and still is complaining about again this year.

Casey Pearce, of Chargers.com, reports San Diego Chargers LB Donnie Edwards (back) missed practice Tuesday, Aug. 8.

The guy may have a reasonable complaint but hey it is with his agent and himself when he picked up the pen and happily sign the deal. lack of forsight. Awww shucks. We just dumped most of our head cases why would we want to add another one at 33 years of age?
This year LB was not a major aim of the club. It is not the front offices fault that Reggie fell into our laps and changed the draft. So we did not get AJ and probly some other D players because of the money invested in the offensive backfield. We have most of the LB corp signed to one year deals now and that indicates piece mealing at the position to me.
Get some young blood and next year spend the money early in FA for the defensive caption. Just like we did with Drew and flood the LB position like we did at safty and WR. think long term. Example of whats out there now:

He's hurt like I'm hurt when my wife asks me to do yard work.
Look how happy McKenzie was after he was traded here. We didn't redo his deal right away either. We redo his deal next year IF he plays up to a new deals standards.
We desperately need another playmaker on defense and this guy is one. I believe he is worth a 4th rounder, but if he keeps pissing off the Chargers owner maybe they will let him go for a fifth or sixth rounder. Certainly no one would have a problem with that scenario?

Now you are talking some sense. A 5 or 6 and if needed a player. but a pick in the top 4 no way. but He is a head case too. is it really worth it? I say no

Edwards would help the defense a ton, but we are fairly young and I see Payton looking down the road...there are usually some awesome players in the 4th round. Kind of like the Brees trade, with a free agent you know what he can do in the league! Edwards would help a ton right now, so what do you do? Get a player now or try to put the long-term (somewhat risky) young players into the equation? Where does leadership play into these type of descisions? Brees makes a nice leader which we needed in the huddle. Is Edwards helthy and is he a character guy who can lead the young LB's?

Gee, let me see who do we have on the team that could help us out with evaluation on Donnie Edwards. Who practiced against him every day for years and knows what kind of person he is off the field and in the locker room.
For God sakes why isn't the front office conferring with Drew Brees about this.
I personally think that Edwards would be a HUGE upgrade in the middle for us over anything we have there right now. Next year maybe Fincher will be ready to make the jump and we can drop Edwards, but in the meantime if we don't want everyone and their mother running all over us we need some playmakers up the middle.
We have Kansas City's 4th rounder and they are likely to be pretty good. So its really like a 4th and 2/3 rounder. Not too much to give up in my opinion to secure the best LB out there available at our biggest position of need outside of RT.
The owner really wants Edwards gone as well and is motivated to get rid of him. If Brees gives the thumbs up on Edwards I would take his word for it.
