Chargers | Edwards' trade talks off for now
Fri, 25 Aug 2006 05:41:00 -0700

Kevin Acee, of the San Diego Union-Tribune, reports trade talks between the San Diego Chargers and New Orleans Saints concerning Chargers' LB Donnie Edwards have broken off. The Saints are the only suitor to have contacted the Chargers. Sources also said that Edwards and Chargers' general manager A.J. Smith spoke recently in a meeting requested by Edwards. In that conference, Edwards asked Smith to let him go to New Orleans. The Saints would only offer a fourth-round draft pick for Edwards. The Chargers contacted the Saints and said they would take a third-rounder in exchange for Edwards, but New Orleans held firm. Edwards pulled up lame in the Chargers' second practice on the first day of training camp and has not practiced since. He has in the past week appeared on the verge of returning to practice but has yet to do so. Head coach Marty Schottenheimer has said Edwards will be the starter if he is healthy.

Saints | Shanle will compete at middle linebacker
Thu, 24 Aug 2006 22:57:09 -0700

Larry Holder, of the Biloxi Sun-Herald, reports New Orleans Saints LB Scott Shanle will compete for the starting job at middle linebacker.

I think the Edwards option is just about done with, now. IMO "Thank God". Chargers overpriced damaged old MLB and we found another plug for our leaky D. A one year contract to boot, if it does not work or a better option comes around next year. Best of all it was a 7 not a 2,3 or a 4 and no players involved. Thumbs up to payton and the gang once again.

RE: kllf: Edwards and Shanle

I could compete for the starting job at MLB this year and I'm 33 years old, 5 knee surgeries and 15 Lbs. overweight.

I still would like to have Edwards. I don't care if he is old and a little banged up. The guy is a stud, would provide excellent veteran presence, and IMO can still play. Not to mention, I don't know if anybody has noticed, our linebackers stink more than a foot with a pile of sh** on top of it (with burnt hair sprinkled on top of that).

Awful idea. Our WRs are pretty thin. We HAVE to have both Horn AND Stallworth. Take either one of those guys out of the lineup and our WR corps is a joke. Horn, Hass, Henderson. Ugh. Don't forget that Horn and Stallworth are our ONLY established and proven WRs.

and our linebackers are deep???? I honestly dont think WR is even in the top 3 of our problems.....at all......LB's, D-Line, O-line, Secondary are huge concerns......way more so than WR's

It's not a top 3 problem right now, but you take away Stallworth and it will be. Especially with Joe's fragility. I mean I would like to get Donnie Edwards, but I don't believe in the philosophy of filling one hole by digging a new one.

There have been rumors Carolina is making a play for Donnie Edwards. Jake Delhomme just restructured his contract today and the Panthers are now over 6 million dollars under the cap. Is Edwards headed to Carolina soon? I guess we'll find out.
