Meet New Saint DT

Saints claimed DT Antwan Lake off waivers from the Falcons.

Lake showed he can be an effective pass rusher with 3.5 sacks in limited duty last season. He fell out of favor in Atlanta but should be a part of a weak on-paper rotation in New Orleans.

Anybody have more on this guy?

Falcons | Lake released
Thu, 24 Aug 2006 22:01:02 -0700

AtlantaFalcons.com reports the Atlanta Falcons have released DT Antwan Lake.

Standing an impressive six foot four and over three hundred pounds, Atlanta
Falcons defensive tackle Antwan Lake has been waiting for the 2006 football
season all his life. Undrafted three seasons ago, Lake was signed as a
restricted free agent to compete for the starting defensive tackle position
opposite Pro Bowler Rod Coleman this preseason. Lake and incumbent
Chad Lavalais are the front runners to claim the position that coach Jim
Mora declared up for grabs at the start of the off-season. One of the biggest
weaknesses of the Falcons in 2005 was their inability to stop the run up the
middle, which is exactly where Lake fits in. Although Lake has the ability
to get to the quarterback, he is more useful to Atlanta as a run stuffer. The
Falcons have one of the quickest defensive lines in the NFL with newly
acquired John Abraham and Falcon veteran Patrick Kerney, however the
cost of sporting that lineup is being soft at stopping the inside run.....

The sack on QB Vinny Testaverde forced a fumble that was recovered by DE Patrick Kerney and led to a field goal.
Registered five tackles and a career-high 1.5 sacks at Detroit (11/24).

Jets | M. Davis waived from team
Sun, 27 Aug 2006 12:51:53 -0700

The New York Jets announced LB Mondoe Davis has been waived from the team.

Former University of Delaware standout Mondoe Davis had an outstanding game on special teams and snared an interception while playing linebacker for the New York Jets in a 10-3 preseason victory over the Detroit Lions last Friday, Aug. 12.

Davis, who also had two tackles in the game, was singled out by Jets Head Coach Herman Edwards. "He's a tough guy. Fast. Smart," Edwards told the Newark (N.J.) Star-Ledger in a profile on the former Fightin’ Blue Hen. "He did a great job on special teams and made the big play on the tipped ball. He likes football. Has great energy. Asks great questions. You like those kind of guys."

Vikings | Hopoi released from team
Sun, 27 Aug 2006 00:16:15 -0700

Vikings.com reports Minnesota Vikings DL Manase Hopoi has been released from the team.
Position: DT Number: 56
School: Washington Height: 6'4
Status: Declared Weight: 280

A player that may not be the greatest athlete but boy does he have a motor, I mean he never gives up on a play, he is the consummate ball player
He also may not have the ideal size for the inside interior area, but he is tough, holds up well inside against the rush, and often disrupts the opposing teams running game
He also brings a consistent rush up the middle on the opposing quarterback , which disrupts a quarterbacks throwing lanes and gives them the impression that the pocket is collapsing around them
You can often find this defensive lineman helping on a tackle down field 20 yards or more, and he will pursue the ball from sideline to sideline
I would like to see him gain another 20lbs or so to help him hold up against the NFL competition he will be competing with on a every down basis
As for his draft status, I feel the (6th RD) would be good value, mainly due to his lack of ideal size for the scouts, I also could see him as a non-drafted player, if that is the case some lucky team will really make out!

Vikings | Bubin released from team
Sun, 27 Aug 2006 00:15:54 -0700

Vikings.com reports Minnesota Vikings OT Sean Bubin has been released from the team.

Offensive Tackle
College: Illinois
Height: 6-6
Weight: 306
Hometown: Rantoul, Ill.

Analysis | Agility | High School | Personal

OVERVIEW
Model of consistency for the Illini, starting three seasons at the demanding left offensive tackle position … Allowed only one quarterback sack in 36 games as a starter … A two-way lineman in high school, he spent his freshman season at Illinois performing on special teams … Replaced Marques Sullivan at left tackle the following year, leading the way as the offense set school season records for yardage in both 2001 and 2002.
ANALYSIS
Positives: Has a tall frame with long arms, broad shoulders, good thickness in the chest, wide waist and hips, thick thighs and calves and above-average balance … Shows excellent body control on the move, exploding on contact … Has above-average lateral agility and quickly gets out front when pulling in space … Looks fluid in making the hard reach block, then pivoting to locate a secondary target … Plays with a good base, keeping his feet underneath his body … Sets a heavy anchor and rarely over-extends … Uses his mass and strength very well when blocking in-line … Stays on blocks consistently and shows proper hand placement that allows him to control and sustain … Sets his feet and shows quickness kicking out in his pass blocking, using his speed to redirect inside … Adept at switching up on stunts and is quick to recognize and locate the blitz … His nimble feet allow him to drop step and cut off and reach when zone blocking … Also gives 100-percent effort to hold on and stay on blocks … Keeps his shoulders square on double teams and has the burst to locate linebackers working into the second level.
Negatives: Gets good movement off the snap, but needs to keep his shoulders square rather than lean into the defenders … More of a mauler than a fighter, preferring to defeat his man with finesse rather than aggression … Has a good kick slide, but is sometimes late to cut off vs. the wide speed rush … Gets his leg base a little too wide at times, resulting in him being late to change direction vs. the quick speed rush.

AGILITY TESTS
5.13 in the 40-yard dash … 1.82 10-yard dash … Bench presses 225 pounds 25 times … 4.74 20-yard shuttle … 7.54 three-cone drill … 26½-inch vertical jump … 8-foot-2 broad jump … 33¼-inch arm length … 9 3/8-inch hands.
