Chargers LB Steve Foley was shot last night and is currently in surgery to treat the wounds.

Team sources tell FoxSports' Jay Glazer that an off-duty copy shot Foley. That hasn't been confirmed by police. Foley, a starting outside linebacker, was arrested this April for a reported fight with multiple police officers.

depends on the severity. a few years ago, porter was shot, and his recovery took no time. like the steelers, the chargers run a 3-4, and cannot afford to lose any of their starting linebackers.

Ouch those California popo's don't play around. I'd like to hear the rest of the story but it sure does affect the Edwards' trade. I can't see them letting Edwards go with Foley, who's the leader of that linebacking core, hurt. Hopefully he's okay... sucks to be him.

Now, I wonder if this will actually accelerate the trade of Edwards. The first thought would be "no way they deal him now", butr if he doesn't really want to play for the Chargers, having an unmotivated LB, or worse, one that's sitting out, when you are 1 starting LB short...

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports San Diego Chargers LB Steve Foley was shot near his home early Sunday morning, Sept. 3, following a traffic stop by an off-duty city of Coronado police officer. Foley's injuries are not believed to be life threatening. Early in the morning, the off-duty officer started following a suspected drunk driver in the area of northbound Highway 163 and Highway 52. After stopping at a red light, the off-duty officer pulled beside Foley, identified himself as a police officer, and ordered him to pull over, but Foley drove away. The off-duty officer followed Foley to a cul-de-sac in Poway, where he lives. Foley got out of the car and started walking toward the officer, while his female passenger drove the car alongside him, sheriff's homicide Lt. Dennis Brugos said. The officer identified himself again and then fired a warning shot into the bushes. Foley reached into his pants with his right hand as he approached the officer and the officer fired at the suspect. Foley acknowledged he'd been shot, Brugos said, but continued to move toward the officer, who fired again. Foley then fell to the ground. Brugos said it was unclear whether Foley was armed.

Wow... I wonder if they attempted to show him their badge before they pulled out their gun. I mean anyone can say their a frickin' cop... and they weren't in uniform.

Probably another case of an athlete thinking he is above the law.

... but then, consider an umarked car following you at 3AM, a guy without uniform telling you he's a cop, then pulling a gun on you.
