Browns DBs Ailing

The Browns head into Sunday's season opener with primary concerns in their secondary because almost all of the key defensive backs are banged up.

The first injury report of the season Wednesday looked more like roll call for a DB meeting:

Cornerbacks Leigh Bodden and Gary Baxter have strained pectoral muscles. Both are listed as questionable, but participated in team drills Wednesday.

Cornerback Daylon McCutcheon is out after arthroscopic knee surgery four weeks ago.

Safety Brian Russell is doubtful after having a bursa sac removed from his elbow last week.

Cornerback Antonio Perkins is questionable with a pulled groin muscle, but he practiced Wednesday.

Coach Romeo Crennel said Bodden could've played in the preseason finale had it been a regular-season game. But he missed the final eight games of the 2004 season with a torn pectoral muscle.

Joe oughta be gettin non-stop double teams until the other receivers prove themselves. Hopefully that starts now. Long bombs to Devery and many first down catches by Colston. Of course at least 4 or more for Reggie.

Agreed totally. I hope we see the new coaching staff take a couple of shots early, something we haven't done nearly enough lately. Even if you miss, you back the safeties up and help the run game or get some illegal contact calls. A go route to Devery on the first drive would be in my gameplan if I were Payton.

Man I'm ready for Sunday.

We got to get Joe, Colston, and DH moving like lightning through their secondary. OK, this is where I hope the OL holds up long enough so we can get those throws. Otherwise, this game will be a stalemate until somebody gets the right turnover for their team.

Bodden climbs great depth to succeed

Where would the Browns' secondary be without Leigh Bodden?

The short answer is deep trouble.

The 2003 undrafted free agent from Duquesne University has climbed higher on the depth chart in four years than anyone. From "gunner" on the punt team and last cornerback in the camp rotation to starter? His ascension goes even beyond that.

This preseason, Bodden stood as the only cornerback of the top three to stay healthy. Not only was he healthy, he excelled in practice and in the games. The guy was so elevated by an inner confidence that he practically floated through training camp.

So when Bodden's name appeared on the injury report this week, listing him questionable with a pectoral injury, a flashback to the Butch Davis years appeared.

Davis would call it the injury du jour of the week -- one particular malady that infected multiple players.

Cornerback Gary Baxter missed 10 games last year with a torn pectoral and the bulk of four exhibition games this summer with a partial tear in the other. Bodden, in fact, missed eight games in 2004 with a pectoral tear and now felt discomfort in the other one.

Not to fear, though. He insists he will not be impaired for the season opener Sunday against the New Orleans Saints.

"I have no clue how it happened," Bodden said Thursday. "I just felt it when I was lifting [last week]. It's not the one I tore [in 2004]. I have a full range of motion. It feels a lot better than what it did."

Baxter has said he intends to play Sunday for the first time since injuring his pectoral in the first exhibition game. Daylon McCutcheon, who was targeted to compete with Bodden for the other starting cornerback spot, is still out after arthroscopic surgery on a knee early in camp.
