LAFAYETTE — It’s supposed to happen. Most figures involved are expecting it to happen.

The bottom line at this point, however, is that nothing has been finalized.

The issue is a 3 p.m. press conference Friday at the UL Lafayette Alumni Center to announce that the New Orleans Saints’ annual Black-and-Gold Scrimmage will be held at Cajun Field on Saturday, Aug. 2.

The press conference has been scheduled, but UL Lafayette athletic director Nelson Schexnayder confirmed on Tuesday that a final agreement hasn’t been reached.

“There’s a very small split on one or two minor things,’’ Schexnayder said. “We’re hoping that everything will work out and we can reach an agreement. It’s close, but we haven’t signed a contract yet.’’

If the two sides can’t agree on the final details, the press conference would be cancelled. The press conference was scheduled in coordination with the Saints’ Western Region Caravan, which will be coming through Lafayette on Friday.

Saints’ general manager Mickey Loomis, coach Jim Haslett and players Ashley Ambrose, Darren Howard and Jerome Pathon will be available to meet and greet fans from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the Acadiana Mall on Friday.

If an agreement between the university and the Saints is reached prior to 3 p.m. on Friday, the announcement will be made for Lafayette area Saints’ fans to see the rest of the team in action in the Black-and-Gold intrasquad scrimmage.

The Black-and-Gold game is an annual event that culminates the first week of training camp with an intrasquad scrimmage.

It’s a step above a normal practice, but not a regular exhibition game. A year ago, the scrimmage consisted of four drives in team drill, three 15-play, drives and four 12-play drives.

Starters are usually mixed in with reserves to reduce the risk of injury.

In addition to the game — tentatively set for 7 p.m. — there will be a full day of activities planned in and around Cajun Field.

NEW ORLEANS SAINTS TO HOLD ANNUAL BLACK AND GOLD SCRIMMAGE AT UNIVERSITY OF LOUISIANA AT LAFAYETTE’S CAJUN FIELD ON AUGUST 2
For Immediate Release
May 16, 2003

The New Orleans Saints, in conjunction with the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, announced today that the club will hold its annual Black and Gold Scrimmage at 31,000-seat Cajun Field in Lafayette on Aug. 2, 2003.

“We are truly excited to have formed a partnership with the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and look forward to playing the 2003 Black and Gold Scrimmage before a packed house at Cajun Field, said Saints Executive Vice President of Administration Arnold D. Fielkow. “Acadiana has always been ‘Saints County,’ just as it is ‘Ragin’ Cajun County,’ and we look forward to giving fans in and around Lafayette an up-close and personal look at the 2003 Saints.

Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager of Football Operations Mickey Loomis echoed Fielkow’s sentiments.

“When the decision was made to move our training camp to our training facility in Metairie, we said that we would do everything we could to bring Saints football to our many fans in this state, Loomis said. “Lafayette is a tremendous community and the people there have been wonderful to work with in coordinating this scrimmage. Lafayette has great football fans, and we look forward to being there in early August.

UL Lafayette Athletics Director Nelson Schexnayder said: “We’re very excited about the New Orleans Saints coming to Acadiana. There is a strong Saints following in this area and we’re thrilled to have the Saints as our partner for this event. It should be a very fun day in and around Cajun Field.

The annual Black and Gold Scrimmage has been a showcase event of the Saints’ summer training camp and 2003 will mark the first time it has been held in Lafayette. Plans are to rotate this annual scrimmage to different regional sites from year to year. In addition to the football scrimmage, the event will involve a full day of activities, including youth clinics, a Saintsations autograph session, the Saints Experience with interactive inflatables, and many other family-oriented games. These events will be held at the baseball stadium – M.L. “Tigue Moore Field – adjacent to Cajun Field.

Ticket prices for the Black and Gold Scrimmage range from $10-20, and include admission to all related activities. Discounts will be offered to Saints season-ticket holders, students, military and groups over 20. Black and Gold Scrimmage tickets will be available beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 17.
