West Coast Offense.

Is it just me or does our version of the west cosat offense not seem to be as effective as the one the 49'ers run with montana and young. The 49'ers seemed to get everyone involved like the fullback, running back, tight end, receivers and the QB. They use to scare the hell out of me because you never knew where the ball was going. The saints just seem much more predictable, that's all I'm saying. Why aren't we addressing the fullback position. In he NFL you want every player to be versitile at every position. Seems to me we are very one dimentional at full back. Also, Mike McCarthy's play calling seems to puzzle me at times. Does anyone agree?

Agreed with his often irrational plays. The west coast has become a very general term from what Bill Walsh originally created. More teams are using this style of offense and thus more players and coaches are defending it more frequently. Some things that never used to happen on offense in the 70\'s and prior were undefensible when Walsh first brought it out. Now the defensive schemes are more geared to trying to stop anything with minimal damage.

Let\'s not forget one other small detail. They were called Montana and Young. We don\'t have them. :D I like AB but he\'s neither one of these guys yet.

Thank you JoeSam. I was going to say , how can we compare not only their version of west coast offense but the players executing. That offense was designed for that team.. Look at the receiving corp. Good running back and fullback. Not an apples to apples comparison.

Terelle Smith is a hell of a blocker, but he couldn\'t catch the ball with a cast net. We haven\'t had a decent tightend here for quite a few years. If Conwell and a healthy Sloan produce like they should, our gulf coast offense could be smooth and very effective.

Well c\'mon guys - who kills (or killed) us with the 9ers west coast scheme? Craig, Waters, Taylor, RICE? Or Fred Beasley? Granted, I\'m sure Beasley has gashed us plenty, but it doesn\'t take a great fullback or TE to run the west coast. We\'ve got what we need - our style of play seems to me to be more like the Rams of 1999/2000 than a true west coast offense.

The West Coast scheme includes a lot of passing to create a virtual running game through quick short passes. I don\'t see us running a whole lot of quick outs or zero routes - and I almost never see us run the slants and underneath drags to WRs that makes the west coast what it is. The only thing about our system that looks like the west coast to me is our willingness to throw on first down.

I think we more closely resemble a split personality - one being a conventional Pro Style offense, the other being something similar to the Ram\'s style of play - where you load the field with weapons, spread the defense, and then get the ball to whoever is open.

WhoDat..right on the money man. I think Haslett is modeling our offense after the Rams. I think with the talent we have on offense we should go more towards the 49\'ers version of the west coast offense.

I think you\'re right WhoDat. Seems to me they want to run some hybrid type offense. Anyhoo, here\'s my take on this teams plan. They plan to outscore everyone else. The way I see it is simple. They know they\'re gonna get smoked on the D side of the ball soooo they\'re just planning to score more points than the D gives up. Whether it\'s 30-40-50 or whatever it ends up being they wanna turn the field into a track meet. But hey...just give me a W baby!
