Chargers to Receive a 3rd Round Pick for Brees in 2007

Did anyone know that, despite the fact that the Chargers did not trade Brees, they will still receive a 3rd round pick next year? This is from an article by Charles Robinson from Yahoo! Sports. This begs the question: Will we recieve a high draft pick for letting Darren Howard go?

7. The San Diego Chargers re-signing Drew Brees
Sound crazy? Yes, it's hard to believe that we can look back and call the decision to let Brees walk a good one. But it was considering all the factors. First, people who look at Brees and say he got away for nothing are incorrect. In fact, the Chargers are expecting to get a third-round pick from the league in compensation for Brees' departure in free agency. That’s only slightly less than what Minnesota got for Daunte Culpepper in trade (second round, 51st overall). But beyond the compensation aspect, Chargers general manager A.J. Smith was right to be confident in what he had in young backup Philip Rivers. Rivers has not only stepped in and put up a 100.3 passer rating through nine games, but he has made a seamless transition into a leadership role. Would the Chargers still be one of the AFC's Super Bowl favorites with Brees still on board? Yes. But by making the decision to let him go, the Chargers have jumpstarted the inevitable transition to Rivers, and finally moved on from the awkward debate that hung over the franchise all of 2005.

If that's the case, we should be getting some nice compensatory picks as well. Wow! We're gonna' have one hell of a draft......again!!!!!!!!!

OK I'm confused. Maybe I don't know much about how contracts and Free Agents work out but Brees was not signed by San Diego and that made him a Free Agent. No more contract, no obligations to San Diego. Then why do we have to give them a 3rd round pick?
Just confused

It's not that we're giving the Chargers our third round pick. It's called a compensatory draft pick. Teams that lose vital players to free agency are given picks the following year to replenish their players. The NFL uses a pretty complicated system to decide which team lost out during the year.

We actually picked Colston with our compensatory pick not a regular pick.

i still don't like it...everyone bump down a spot in the fourth for a player they didn't want. that one bump could cause us to lose a player like Colston in next yr draft

Atleast the Saints don't have to pay the draft pick.

The system goes by which players you lost to free agency vs. who you replaced them with. For example, we lost Darren Howard and replaced him with no one. So depending on how well Howard does this year, that will determine what kind of compensatory pick we get...most likely a 5th round pick. Had Bentley stayed healthy and had a Pro Bowl year, then we probably would have gotten a 3rd or 4th round compensatory pick for him, but since he got hurt, we will get nothing. San Diego most likely will get a 3rd rounder for Brees based on his performance this year. I dont think any other guys we lost would warrant us getting any other picks.

It's all in the reflexes.

i dont think they will get anything for brees b/c they had a viable player to take his place.. ie rivers... i believe that you only get compensation for players if you dont get anyone to replace said players and they already had rivers
