Defense vs. Offense!!!

Is it better to have a dominalte offense or defense? They say defense wins championships, right? But I saw the rams do it with offense. Which is better to have, a dominate offense or defense?

If you stop and think, the Rams won the Super Bowl that year with a pretty damn decent showing by the defense. Tennesee\'s defense is definitely what got them there that year, and their offense didn\'t have NEAR the weapons the Rams did. The Rams came up big in the clutch as well. The last play of the game was a yard from them losing, but they stopped the Titans when it counted.

The lambs definitely had a good defense when they won the superbowl, the offense just got all the hype. I think that you need a balanced team to win these days, and you cant put it all on one side of the ball.

Defense win championships. The problem with N.O>,when we had D was we couldn\'t score at all. The Rams simply could outgun you . They had a moderate defense. Think of defensive squads.....Bucaneers(sorry),Giants (of old),Baltimore Ravens. There have have been many successful Defensive teams. Our pendulum swung the other way. We became all offense. I would say that our victories against the Rams were because of defensive efforts.

I read a stat somewhere that the last 10 times a top-3 D played a top-3 O in the SB, the top 3 D won 9 of the 10. Thats pretty telling.

i think you guys are giving the spams D in 99 a little to much credit

they were good but when an offense is scoring that much it causes the opponents offense to play over their heads which in turn causes more opportunities for the D

i do agree that while you need a balanced team on both sides of the ball that D might just be a little more important and special teams is huge factor that often gets overlooked

Didn\'t the Saints beat the Buc\'s twice last year?

And? Give me your point please. How many other games did they lose? And did they win the Super Bowl because of Mike Alstott,Johnson........?NO!

yeah we beat them twice last year but that was more of a match up kinda thing

all the teams that beat tampa last year were PHYSICAL football teams

NO, philly, pittsburgh all hard hitting physical teams

tampa uses speed to win games, however if you keep them out there and keep pounding on them they start to slow down due to lack of size

sub,

how do you figure johnson and alstot won the super bowl? didn\'t there D account for like 4 tD\'s?

Rusta, that was blatant sarcasm to Billy C\'s post

Subguy,

Blatant sarcasm...don\'t hurt yourself with those big words, you might fall down or something. Here\'s my point. Tampa has had that defense for at least 4 years now. How many superbowls have they won? Maybe you should give a little more credit to what Gruden did with that offense. Ya think?

pakowitz 06-07-2003 11:15 AM

Defense vs. Offense!!!

whoa, whoa, whoa.. give gruden credit for what he did what the O? what O? there line sucked for most part of the year... they had no running game.. brad johnson? can u actually consider him a QB? ill give him credit for the D, he did the smart thing.... and not change any of the D coaches from when dungy left... that was brilliant... then in the superbowl... gruden implemented his system to counteract the raiders system.. have u forgotten that he was the raiders coach the year before.. it wasnt the bucs who won the superbowl.. it was there system... and he also got some help from rich gannon who played the worst game of his career... 5 ints? gannon hadent throwed 5 ints the whole year... and dexter jackson? he played the best game of his career.. then what does he do.. leaves for AZ... wow he must have been pretty impressed with gruden and winning to just leave like that... makes me wanna sign with the bucs... winning the superbowl b/c the matchup was favorable for tampa... one more victory during the regular season and it would have been us playing for the title against the raiders....

Pak,

News Flash........Brad Johnson threw for 2,799 yards, 22TD\'s, and only 6int\'s, so yeah, I\'d say that qualifies him as an NFL quarterback. What did Gruden do for the offense? Here ya go..........improved Brad Johnson\'s QB rating from 74.2 to 90.59, Averaged 34.5 pts per game in the post season, rushed for 1,571 yards in the regular season. All of those are improvements from the previous year. Don\'t get me wrong, the defense had more to do with them winning the superbowl, but don\'t overlook what the offense did.

Bottom line...Defense is more important to have. BUT, it only works if you have an offense that doesn\'t suck.

I think one of my earlier posts did say, Defense wins championships. Look at past Saints, the secret to the having that championship team is being able to score enough to support the D. However when we were the Kings of the D, Morton Andersen couldn\'t provide enough points.

um billy...
tampa might have averaged 34.5 pts in the post season but about 60% of those points were from the D

OK this post is basically worthless, but Gator, are you sure you\'re not thinking of \'01? They had the 4th best defense in the league statistically in \'01 when they lost to the Patties. Honestly I can\'t remember how their defense ranked in \'99, but I think I would remember if it had been that highly ranked... then again I do drink alot.

Regardless, their offense helped to make their defense better that year. They jumped out on people so quickly that it made most teams abandon their game plan to play catch up. That allows your defense to pin its ears back and go after the QB big time. Our offense does the same for our defense... the problem is that we have a couple of big rocks up front in place of DTs and linebackers who have a hard time finding the field let alone the quarterback.

oh my god i am actually in agreement with dat

somebody write this down

BlackandBlue 06-09-2003 04:55 PM

Defense vs. Offense!!!

If you need some backing Gator, I got your back. The 2001 Rams defense ranked 1st in the NFC in yards per game allowed and yards allowed total, and 4th in point allowed per game. That was in the NFC. And if my memory serves me right, the 1999 was a better statistical year for their defense than 2001 was.

BillyCarpenter1 06-09-2003 05:08 PM

Defense vs. Offense!!!

Gatorman,

Ok, here\'s my 2 cents thrown in the nickel. The Rams offense scored so many points, so quickly, that the opposing teams had to pass just to try to stay in the game. How many teams realisctically had the passing game that the Rams had? Not any!!! The defense might have been pretty good, but I wouldn\'t be judging them on any stats, because the offense made them look better than they were, just like the buc\'s defense made the offensive stats better because they kept getting the ball back for them. Any defense looks pretty good while they are standing on the sideline watching the offense score 45 pts per game or whatever it was.

BillyCarpenter1 06-09-2003 05:57 PM

Defense vs. Offense!!!

I have to be careful what I put on here!!! Anything can be taken out of context. I\'ll go along with you about the offense getting all the credit and the defense probably not getting enough BUT, what I\'m saying is the defense wasn\'t as good as their stats indicates because the offense changed the whole complection of most of the games they were in.

BillyCarpenter1 06-09-2003 06:12 PM

Defense vs. Offense!!!

Your right, to prove a point I\'d make a deal with the devil. I also agree with you about stat\'s in general but sometimes things really scew stats and that high power offense of the Rams I think scewed the denfesive stats tremendously.
