I must say I have to agree with you gator. I can\'t find one thing in that statement to argue with you about. When Ditka quit, he stayed and I think there is a loyalty factor there with him getting the defensive coordinator position. I just don\'t like his style for whatever reason. He\'s just not intense enough for me.

I think I\'ve stated on many posts in here before my feelings for Venturi. He sucks. Get rid of him. Viya con dios! Adios! See ya, don\'t wanna be ya! Name your cliche\' to get him the hell out of New Orleans. The only reason he\'s been loyal to New Orleans is because he\'d be no more than a team\'s water distributor in any other NFL city. BLOW ME VENTURI!!!!!!!!!

Venturi is definitely loyal to the Saints organization. He would make a good director of player development or something fancy named like that standing for babysitter. He has proven he isn\'t a good positional coach, coordinator or head coach.
The time has expired on his free ride.

This guy is a clown and he\'ll be gone in 2 years without a doubt.
We could only be so lucky. However, if history dictates the future, Haslett will be fired, and Venturi will be given the head coaching position, we will all suffer with bags over our heads, and the Saints will once again be picking in the top 10 in next years draft.

Playoff\'s??? You wanna talk about playoff\'s???
Yes, Jim, I really do :P

I guess I will jump in here and try to defend Venturi. He really didn\'t have the best talent in the world on the field last year, so I will give him the benefit of the doubt. Players can make a coach look like a genius or an idot. Let\'s say he was the defensive coach for the Buc\'s last year, I think that would have been would of the top defenses in the league regardless of who the coach was, simply because of the talent they have. Would they have done as well? Who knows. This I do know, if the Saints have a poor showing this year, **** rolls down hill and Venturi will be stepping all in it.

Last year he had an excuse. We were slow as a blonde in a Calculus class.

But this year he has no excuses. By years end if we are not in the top 15 defenses we may want to look at replacing him. And thats even with the questionmarks we have at DT, MLB, CB2 and SS.
If he even brings up the excuse of needing time for all the new guys to gel, he should be given all the help he needs to pack his bags.

Is Venturi the 3rd DC we\'ve had in 3 years? Who was there before Florida stole Zook from us? Was it Bunning?

If a D-coordinator means so little why did the Bucs make such a point of retaining Monte Kiffin? He scripts the defense and makes the adjustments. Granted the players do the work, but Rick Venturi would not have achieved the same results with their defense. Look at the Dolphins defense last year. Almost all of the players were complaining they were being made to play to passively. You can\'t tell me they aren\'t a talented squad. They were asked to play away from their instinctive strengths and it didn\'t work. Not the players fault there.

Because they felt he is an excellent coach. The point I was making is that maybe if Venturi has the players, then he might look like a lot better coach. I\'m not saying coachs don\'t have a lot to due with a teams success or failure. They do!! But I think the players have much more to do with it than the coaches. Players can make a coach look like a genius or an idot. To give you an example look at the 85\' Chicago Bears did both offensively and defensivly. Mike Ditka looked like a genius. Then look at what Ditka did with the Saints. He looked like an idiot. The point is Ditka did not change his way of coaching. What changed is he did not have the talent.

I\'m sure I\'ll be corrected if wrong but isn\'t 2003 the 1st year we\'ll have the same DC returning since the 1999 season?

1999 Ditka\'s DC? (I\'m fuzzy on this year)
2000 Bunting repaced Ditka\'s DC whoever that was
2001 Zook Replaced Bunning
2002 Venturi relaced Zook.

The continuity certainly couldn\'t hurt us.
I may be incorrect about Bunting being the DC in 2000, that may have been Zook, but you get my point!

So can getting good coordinators. Buddy Ryan was responsible for the success of the Bears defense and he proved that everywhere he went in his career, turning mediocre defenses into powerhouses that could dominate the league. They also returned 10 of 11 starters four years in a row which helps. The success of that defense was played in part by the ingenuity of the defensive scheme. Do you think they would have achieved the same level of defensive dominance playing a cover 2 zone like the Bucs? They had success because their coordinator used his personel properly and with his scheme. A good defense will always make a good offense look, and vice-versa. I know people are arguing the Rams defense in another thread and it\'s the same story. It\'s a field postion game. You will always have a better chance of winning on a shorter field than your opponent. My point is, a good coordinator is as crucial as good players. A bad coordinator can force players against their strengths, make them look ineffective and cost you games by failing to adjust. I don\'t buy the fact that he cannot shoulder the blame of his squads play. He played Sammy Knight and Charlie Clemons against their natural abilities and I think tehy\'ll rebound this season. He wanted to play two fat two gaps in the middle and stick a natural pass rusher into a run support role and look what happened.

Anyway I forgot where I was going with that......my opinion is that a good coordinator is as valuable as a good first team. You can have a squad of all stars, each specializing in one style of play, make them play a way they aren\'t accustomed, or in a scheme that offsets their ability, and they\'ll stink.
