Weird question....but what is that mark on Brees's face?

Is that some kind of birth mark? I remember seeing it the first time and thinking it was something he sustained during a football game somehow. Obviously it's been there a while.

It was alot worse before he had laser surgery. Did no one watch him play when he was at Purdue. It was hideous, and covered the whole side of his face.
