J. Martin

I did not see the game (I TIVO'd it) but how did J.Martin looked is he a solid back up or this is something we got to sure up in the off season

To me his arm strenght didn't seem really good. But he was running most of the game too, from the rush.

How did Clark, Melton, and Fincher look? I was hoping all would get some PT.

JOESAM2002 12-31-2006 04:48 PM

They did. They all looked good. Clark played very well, but so did the others.

Martin needs to work on his pocket awareness. The other back-ups did very well. This is the best I've ever felt after a loss.

The only worries i have about our boys is the backup QB position. Jaime Martin looked timid, and unaware of what was going on out there, he looked like a rookie and not a 12 year vet. As long as we keep Drew Brees healthy we're be fine, but we defenantly have to address the backup QB position in the offseason. GO NFC SOUTH DIVISION CHAMPION SAINTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well yeah I guess the game was good in a way. It showed that we are done if the game is left up to Martin. Hopefully that will motivate our line to watch out for Drew even more, if they need any more motivation than winning the SB.

Done? Martin had the 2nd and 3rd stringers on O-Line and RB, WR, and TE. Give me a break. Carolina kept most of their starters in on both sides Offense and Defense into the 4th quarter. Peppers, Jenkins, Rucker going at our backup offensive line and him throwing 20-26 and over 200 yards. One pick going for a TD just like Brees in the Baltimore game. Give him a break guys, he is alot better than Bouman was last year.
Just think him having to go in because Brees gets hurt (God Forbid) but with the starters. Also, our backup defense prevented them from getting in the Endzone and only allowed a FG on that last scoring drive.

Let's give Martin a break, yesterday was his first time playing since last season , it would take a couple of games with the starters for him to get into his game.
Martin is a great backup, I was happy when the Saints signed him this past off season, I still say the Saints made the right choice bringing him to N.O

I thought Martin deserved a game ball!!!
He got planted just about every time he went to pass, and he got up every time.
And he rolled with no Deuce, no Reggie, no Colston, no Jammal, no Faine, no Stitch, etc... just some sporadically Karney blocking here and there, which pretty much were the only plays he didn't get planted on the gground.
And indeed, Carolina played the 1st stringers on both sides of the ball the whole game.

I thought, considering the whole scenario, that Martin did pretty well.
He didn't rifle any balls, but he made a few throws to a spot rhar were dead on.

Agree. If Martin had the same people and plays called as Brees he would have done a lot better than he did. No fake double reverses to keep the defenses guessing and backups in the game, I thought he did as good as could be expected.

Martin wont make it next year...he has a bad back and was a questionable for a few weeks this year, thats why the signed Fife to the active squad for a few weeks at the begining of the season...Look for them to sign him or someone else again for the playoffs...I like the guy, but he has the same problem many longtime backups have, no pocket awareness..

yasoon 01-02-2007 08:57 AM

True, the protection wasn't very good.

But, to me, martin's release was really slow and he did not do a good job of getting the ball out quickly. I guess I have been spoiled because drew gets it out so fast.

zgalbert 01-02-2007 09:14 AM

I would look at signing a new backup QB for next year. Yea he did play with all of the backups, but he just looked very weak and didn't have that good of awareness in the pocket. A good veteran QB would be nice as a backup, but a great rookie QB would be nice also.

papz 01-02-2007 09:16 AM

He's a backup quarterback who finally got some playing time with our 2nd and 3rd stringers against Carolina's starters. He did a good job out there and handled himself very well. Not everyone has Jeff Garcia, a 3 time ProBowler, as their backup quarterback. Lay off the guy.

Our backups did a good job out there... especially Scott. I thought he was great in run support. Clark also had a good game. Our backup corners didn't look so good out there. They got torched frequently.

pumpkindriver 01-02-2007 09:46 AM

I think Martin's biggest problem was lack of playing time. I've seen him play before, for another team, and he looked pretty damn good for them. And while hes certainly no Drew Brees, hes a capable back up, and would do fine if our starters are playing with him. Especially since we'd probably lean heavily on the running game. And speaking of starters, while i would've liked to see them play just a bit longer, they did look sharp and I beleive thats what Sean was looking for. If they had played sloppily, I think Sean would've played them much longer than he did. As it is, its Sean's decision and we all just have to trust that he made the right one. After all, hes done pretty good so far.

Euphoria 01-02-2007 10:47 AM

Drew makes up for the lack of protection.
