Bress robbed out of MVP

Interesting comment about Brees being robbed out of MVP posted on NOLA.com Saints Forum.

It’s funny how the whole year all we heard was how close the MVP race was between LT and Drew Brees. Then when it is all said and done, Drew ended up with 4 votes and LT ended up with 44 - Thanks to the media for blowing smoke up our @ss. So I decided to go back through some NFL history to find out if Drew was robbed or not.
First of all, Drew threw for 4,418 yards this year completing 64% of his passes while throwing 26 TDs and 11 INTs. This gave him a QB rating of 96.2. The Saints went 10-6 this year coming compared to 3-13 the previous year.

LaDainian Tomlinson rushed for 1,815 yards while scoring 28 TDs (NFL Record). His Chargers went 14-2 but were also 9-7 the previous year.

Over the past 26 years, the MVP and the offensive player of the year has been the same player 14 times. So that lends a little credence to LT’s double award this year. However, twice in the past 26 years, there has been a co-mvp, or tie if you will.

In 1997 Brett Favre and Barry Sanders shared the award.

Brett Favre completed 59% of his passes as he threw for 3,867 yards, 35 TDs and 16 INTS for a QB rating of 92.6. His Packers went 13-3 that year – they also went 13-3 the year before (Compare this to Drew’s numbers this year and the Saints 3-13 record the prior year)

Barry Sanders rushed for 2,053 yards, 11 TDs with a 6.1 average while his team went 9-7 that year (compare that to LT’s numbers this year)

The other time the MVP tie happened was in 2003 when Peyton Manning and Steve McNair shared the award.

Peyton completed 67% of his passes throwing for 4,218 yards that year, 29 TDs and 10 INTs for a QB rating of 99. The Colts went 12-4 that year but were also 10-6 the previous year (Compare this to Drew’s numbers this year and the Saints 3-13 record the prior year)

McNair completed 63% of his passes throwing for 3,215 yards that year, 24 TDs and 7 INTs. For a QB rating of 100. The Titans went 12-4 that year but went 11-5 the previous year (Compare this to Drew’s numbers this year and the Saints 3-13 record the prior year)

Funny thing was that season, Jamal Lewis was voted the Offensive MVP in 2003 because he rushed for 2,066 yards and 14 TDs (compare that to LT’s numbers this year).

So the 2 times there have been a co-mvp in the past 26 years, the race wasn’t as close as LT and Drew this year. In addition, in 2003 the Associated Press proved that the MVP and Offensive MVP did not have to be the same player.

I know these are a lot of numbers too look at but if you look at them closely, it gives me reason to believe that the Saints were ignored yet again because they are not in a “Big media market. What Drew did this year on a new team with a new coach, 40 new players (including a completely revamped offensive line), a city destroyed the previous year by Katrina, and coming off of major shoulder surgery…is nothing short of miraculous.

Welcome to New Orleans Drew.

To be honest, I don't think Drew cares. This team is all about winning together. They want a Lombardi trophy.

You're only robbed if it was yours to begin with. Ya can't sweat what you can't control.

What's the difference between a Super Bowl Ring and an AP MVP award?

If you can't tell the difference you'll continue to fixate on the irrellevant.

Brann makes a real good point. I really don't think personal accolades is what Drew looks for or cares about. He is truly all about the team. I feel sure his team-mates have told him, he is their MVP, and that means more that 50 sports writers crowning you with their opinion. Look at his reaction after the Redskins loss and becoming South Champs. This guy loves this team.

it's easier to pad running stats than to pad quarterback achievements and pressure.
But it was always about Everything Else vs. Saints when a final decision is being made. I'll be the first to congrat Drew for his contributions if he doesn't qualify for the NFL's MVP. If the Chargers lose one game and it's over. How many games can they actually win a row? Hmm.
Here's to hoping Drew will hold the Lombardi instead of the MVP.
