Any thoughts on Ron Dayne?

Quite a few members were quite comfortable going with Keaton and Fenderson as our RB depth. I threw the Bettis name out there a few weeks back just to see where people sat. How about Ron Dayne? The rumor is already around that the Saints spoke his name. They obviously dipped their oar in the Thomas Jones water. This leads me to think the Saints don't feel that comfy either.
Does anyone think Dayne is a viable option or is he just a underachieving whiner no matter where he goes?

I've said before, with Deuce's track record I want a good backup and hope that he never touches the ball. But I want a good backup nonetheless.

I like Dayne a lot. I hope we can get him. It will give us that one-two punch with Duece. Also, I would love to see him lined up in the backfield at fullback with Duece.

I think Dayne has pros and cons.

Cons:
Doesn\'t break a lot of tackles at the line. (gets tackled too easy)
Work ethic (Although they say he\'s better this year)
Slow initial step

Pros:
With the Saints O-line, he may get the extra step he needs to get a full head of steam.
He could spell Deuce on short yardage, which will reduce wear on deuce.
Change of scenery/system may help this kid.

I think if the price is right, he\'s worth a gamble. We just better not overpay for a back-up.

Goes down easy??.......this guy is a beast. He breaks tackles. In New York it seemed liked as soon as he got the ball the defense was in the backfield. I don\'t think he goes down easy at all. For what ever reason he wasn\'t really given an opportunity in New York.

Well that was the knock on him in NY. When he gets a full head of steam he\'s dangerous. But he had a slow initial step, got caught up in traffic and dropped too easily. 250 lbs is worthless sitting still.

My point was with a better O-line (and we certainly have one) he could get that extra step necessary to get to full speed, where he IS DEFINATELY the beast you refer to.

BTW: thanks for responding.

I didn\'t know that was the knock on him in NY. Thanks for the info. I agree our O-line will allow him to get up to full speed. A guy like Dayne is a north-south runner. You have to keep guys off him to allow him to get up some speed.

He reminds me of ironhead. If you hit him early, he was no problem to tackle, but if you let him get a few steps and some momentum you painfully learned how he got his nickname.

The more I think about it the more anxious I get about signing him.

Not sure what to think. He was beaten out of the starting position by an over-achiever. He was tagged with the \"lazy work ethic\" label because at his size, he should move the pile 4 yards when he hits the line, which he hasn\'t been able to. If we get a good deal for him, sure, why not. Similar to the Rodgers/Dolphins deal.

I don\'t think he would be a good fit here. One of his problems in NY is he does not get enough touches to get going. In NO he would be in the same situation because they are not going to take the ball out of Dueces hands.

I think everyone\'s wish list is that our backup never sees pigskin all year. I would like a RB option if Deuce goes down and miss a couple of games. I don\'t want to have to abandon the running game if Deuce drops, nor do I want to see him have to limp through games, as gutty as it is, he would help us more 2 games later at 100%. If we could not lose too much ground in the running gameplan with a backup that defenses still have to respect it would be a nice safety net.

I agree with the guys that think Dayne needs a scenery change. He has to realize that few teams would give him a starter shot and needs to make the most out of limited opportunities. If his excuse is he doesn\'t get enough touches to get going then he isn\'t worth getting. Most ball players would drool just to get to touch the ball. He needs to show that he can run hard on every carry. Watching some of his carries he seems to put it in neutral if the blocking gives up his hole. He has no cutback I\'ve seen, nor is he elusive in the backfield. New Orleans O-Line could be just what he needs to get a few strong carries and regain some lost self-worth.

I think all of you have good points about Dayne. I also think he believed his press clippings out of college to much. He found out the NFL is different. I also agree that a new team might make a huge difference in his play. Lumm is right about his style, to me he\'s more of a 3 yards in a cloud of dust runner. This guy could be a player given a new chance, will it be the Saints? There are a lot of rumors to that effect but just as many about the Giants keeping him.

I\'m not sure but I would guess the veteran minimum. If he is released. And at this time I\'d say that\'s a big if.

Ron Dayne doesnt impress me much. He was the 11th overall pick in 2000, and hasnt done anything. I think Fenderson and Keaton are much better answers as backups.

By Gatoman---If we could get him that would be nice but when you factor in cost and compensation this deal just isn\'t possible.
Then who would it be a good deal for? And he did lose some weight in the off season. But how do you know it improved his game? There have been no games played yet. And the Saints coaches must be worried about our back-up running backs, because they tried to sign Thomas Jones from Arizona and they ARE going after Dayne.

And I\'ve heard no one that actually knows the asking price for Dayne or the compensation...Where are you getting this information from?

Ron Dayne is one of those runners that has to turn the ball up field quickly to be effective. If he runs parallel to the line he is easy to bring down, similar to Alstott,or R. Williams. The only use I could see for him is goal line use. But people under estimate Deuce size all of the time. I don\'t think he is coming to N.O.

I have to agree with BillyC here (I owed you one back), that just because the Saints are sniffing around running backs makes me think another will come on the roster. Whether it\'s a big name like Dayne or another project, their interest bears note.

Jamal Anderson and Ricky Waters are two RBs that may just jump on with the Saints. Anderson has totally rehabed his knees and he will definitely find a spot on an NFL roster this season. Ricky Waters has been out of football for a while, but if he will drop his price tag teams would stand in line for him.

I have a thought about Ron Dayne, He fat, slow, dumb and oh yeah, he sucks!!! Why dont we try to get Cecil Collins pardoned and get him to play! Ron Dayne couldnt run over most high school defenses, he doesnt realize with his weight he should run straight ahead or even block someone once in a while, but no he thinks he\'s barry sanders. It would be a big mistake for any team besides the Dallas Cowgirls to sign him.
