Also, what about John Carney? He had a hell of a year, but does he return next year?
I agree. He did play well and I definitely think he should be brought back for another year.

Bring Carney back too.. I want to see them all do it again!

Drafting any kicker in the top three rounds, reminds me to much of when we drafted Russell Erxlaben. Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease NO! We have other holes to fill.

OK first of all, Jay Bellamy needs to be on this team next season. The guy is old and he's not going to get top dollars, not anywhere close actually, on the open market. He's never going to start again. So why would he uproot his family from the city they've been in for however many years so he can go and be a backup somewhere else? The guy is a 2nd or 3rd string safety, and a damn good one too. He came in after Harper and Stoutmire went down and he did a good job. Did you see him getting burnt? Nope. What I did see was him providing excellent run support. If we let him go, we're just going to have to spend time and money going after another backup safety. Why not just keep the guy who has been an integral part of this franchise for many years? It's dumb to drop him now.

And about a kicker. I'll be the first one to eat crow about John Carney. I was his #1 basher on this board last year. But the guy proved me wrong, and he had a hell of a year. Using a first day draft choice on a kicker when our kicker made like 90% of his kicks is absolutely ridiculous. That would be the dumbest pick ever. Period.

I don't see anything wrong with drafting a kicker, IF it's maybe an extra 3rd round pick. Hell, if the guy is as good as they are saying, this is a franchise kicker! Carney is on the back end of his career, accurate, or not. And you have to admit, that the league doesn't have very many good kickers right now. Even Janikowski hasn't really lived up to his hype. You guys said, to pick the "best player on the board". Well kickers win games, and they score points, so I definately see it as an important position. Lord only knows what would have happened against the Bears, if Cundiff hit that field goal. Could have been an entirely different outcome.

Oh, and just to clarify.... NO PICK, will ever out dumb the Ditka/Williams debacle. We could pick a punter with our first pick in the draft, and I would still say it's the dumbest.

What's popular is not always right, and what's right is not always popular.....

Wow. I can't believe you would seriously consider using a first day pick on a kicker when we have so many holes. MLB, CB, DT, WR, OL depth. I mean yes, I could understand taking a kicker on the first day if our kicker was terrible, but Carney had probably the best season of his career. Why the hell would we cut him now???? He went 23/25 and even hit a 51 yarder. Like I said before, kickers can kick for a long time, and Carney actually improved last year, so why would we neglect a real position of need and use a valuable pick on a kicker? Your logic of that just doesn't make sense.

Also, this is just a legit question: don't you think the fact that he is kicking a mile high in the air is helping his stats? I do. It's science.

I really don't think a kicker should be at the top of our list. I am with thedeuce on this. Kickers can stay around for a long time, and with Carney being 23/25 that's good enough for me. I really don't want us to get into the Morten Anderson/Jim Mora years of drive the ball down the field and kick a FG. I'd rather see 7 points vs 3 points.

Yes, kick in the mile high air helps.

All I'm saying, is how many games, especially play off, championship, or Superbowls, have you seen it decided on a field goal? Too many to name. This position is so important, the Colts went out and signed the kicker, who kept beating them. Look at them now. It is always said, the best player available should be picked. Notice that I said, IF, he is the best player available, then take him, and only if you find yourself with an extra 3rd, or 4th. Points are points.
