RE: Salary Cap Space for Each Team

Nearly the entire Defense is UFA, so the Cap is going to be significantly less. Plus, there's the amount allocated to draft choices. There's a lot less room there than people might think.

huh.... the only defensive FAs of any importance we have are grant, hollis thomas, scott schanle, omar stoutmire, and jay bellamy...

RE: Salary Cap Space for Each Team

That's 6 UFA's and two more have only one more year on their current contracts that would be considered "of any importance." Still going to adversely affect the Cap pretty severely.

Well I don't see any of those guys getting big bucks except Grant and maybe Thomas and Shanle...

Stoutmire isnt expected to be resigned... shanle shouldnt cost hardly anything... Thomas is aging and wont get that much attention on the open market.. he'll prolly sign pretty cheap... bellamy wasnt even on the team before harper got injured.. he prolly wont be resigned... grant is the only one who will cost anything of significance but he too is an underachiever at times but he is widely considered the "top" DE available besides freeney who i expect to be franchised, so im sure he will want a pretty penny but im not totally sure he is worth it.. he disappears alot at times and just hasnt lived up to the hype to me...

RE: Re: RE: Salary Cap Space for Each Team

My point is that there are at least 7 positions that have to be filled with somewhat long term contracts and 12 of the 28 players are UFA's. That's a HUGE percentage of the defense. That means paying more than what was paid for this year, which will adversely impact the cap even if you just fill in with what was on the roster last season. Subtract what one has to pay out to the incoming rookie class, and there's less room than you think. I think the team is going to pay financially and ultimately quality wise for the choice of "renting" so many of the defensive players.

The following is a list of the contract status of each of the players on the roster at the end of the season. Bold are the players that played significant minutes/starters who are either going to need to be resigned or replaced (either way it will cost more money next year than this year.) Italicized players are those who were injured for a significant portion off the 2006 season; replacement of these players will cost more money.

RE: Re: RE: Salary Cap Space for Each Team

hey zan got a link for that list?

They are all key I agree. but it all depends on what we do in FA. Expect changes on the D. Thats why there was so many one year deals signed. I will feel better thinking of what direction we will go after dallas announces it's new head coach. Even then I think anything is possible.
Why are we not mentioning the cap hit we are going to take at RT along with DE? Do we really want to max out the cap this year? Add in a starting CB and LB to that and we will have a bulk of that gone. Then we have to include replacing the back ups we will have to replace also. The draft will have to be as good or better than last year to dodge spending all the cap room we have.

Salaray Cap doesn't mean much right now, it will in a couple of months. I don't think we will have any problem signing the players we need or keeping the ones we want.
