Is it just me, or does it seem wrong to wait this long to let him go. Most of the teams who were looking for headcoaches, if not all of them have already signed a coach. I think the Chargers could have done this a few weeks ago, to atleast give him the chance to be a headcoach somewhere else.

I don't see Marty coaching anymore. I think this will be his last charge, pardon the pun. The real loser here is San Diego. No matter how many great players you have, with basically all of your coaches gone, there will be a major shake up, in the system. New HC, coordinators, it will take a hell of a coach to get them back into the post season..... Pete Carroll maybe????

Chargers | Team releases statement over Schottenheimer's dismissal
Mon, 12 Feb 2007 18:28:22 -0800

San Diego Chargers president Dean Spanos has released a statement regarding head coach Marty Schottenheimer's dismissal. Spanos said, " Today I made an extremely difficult decision: Marty Schottenheimer is no longer the head coach of the San Diego Chargers." Spanos said the team is responsible for paying the final year of Schottenheimer's contract. He added, "Our fans deserve to know what changed for me over the last month. When I decided to move ahead with Marty Schottenheimer in mid-January, I did so with the expectation that the core of his fine coaching staff would remain intact. Unfortunately, that did not prove to be the case, and the process of dealing with these coaching changes convinced me that we simply could not move forward with such dysfunction between our head coach and general manager. In short, this entire process over the last month convinced me beyond any doubt that I had to act to change this untenable situation and create an environment where everyone at Charger Park would be pulling in the same direction and working at a championship level. I expect exactly that from our entire Charger organization in 2007."

wonder who will take over? little late with FA and the draft coming up. they must have some one lined up. The Tuna? now that would be funny.

This kind of shocked me and made me lose even more respect for the Chargers. First giving up on Brees(THANK YOU JESUS!!!!) and now Marty after having the best record in the NFL? Well whoever takes over that team has alot of talent.

Wow... first Cam left, then Wade Phillips, and now Marty. Talk about a major overhaul to the coaching staff.

Something happened over the past week between Marty and Smith that caused this to occur. The "straw that broke the camel's back", so to speak, since those two have been at odds for years now. This has been building for a while.

Chargers | Schottenheimer update
Tue, 13 Feb 2007 05:59:18 -0800

Kevin Acee, of the San Diego Union-Tribune, reports the decision to fire San Diego Chargers head coach Marty Schottenheimer was a result of Schottenheimer wanting to interview his brother Kurt for the team's defensive coordinator position, according to sources. General manager A.J. Smith and president Dean Spanos did not approve, but Schottenheimer held firm in asserting that he had the right to hire his own coaching staff.

Family....gezz. boy did AJ get mad at all this....."disfunctional"

I realize their was friction between Marty and team management but to callously let him go and to blame it on the outside interests of the coordinators is just so :? .
I will laugh when a new coach won't keep a very talented team focused for playoff dominance. Hey Marty, if you're listening (or reading) chill back with a cold one for a couple years and watch other coaches sweat the players instead and see them get canned for a change.

They were looking for an excuse. I have to admit Marty is not the first coach I would choose to fill a vacany but he would be in my top ten.
