Analysis

Jacoby Jones has been a starting receiver at Lane College for the past four seasons. He is a versatile player who also has the ability to return punts and kickoffs. He is an extremely hard worker with an excellent combination of size and speed for the receiver position. His size allows him to matchup against bigger, more physical defenders and his speed allows him to stretch the field against almost any defensive back that lines up against him. He gets in and out of his breaks quickly and has solid hands. Once he has the ball in his hands, Jones has the ability to make the first defender miss and can be elusive in the open field. His ability to contribute as a return specialist will only add to his draft day value. Though he has four years of starting experience, Jones didn’t play against a high level of competition in college. He is a bit of a tall, lanky receiver who would benefit from adding some bulk and increasing his strength. He needs to work on running more precise routes at the next level. Another criticism of Jones is going to be the fact that he has small hands for a receiver. Jacoby Jones is an excellent physical specimen who has been moving up draft boards since his impressive performance at the East-West Shrine Game. Scouts are reminded of Marques Colston, a small school receiver who was also impressive in the Shrine Game a year ago. With a good showing at the NFL Scouting Combine, Jacoby Jones could become a first day pick. At this point he should be selected on the second day of the 2007 NFL draft.

INSIDE THE NFL: The next Colston?

By D. Orlando Ledbetter
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Clark Atlanta coach Ted Bahhur knows all about wide receiver Jacoby Jones.
NFL scouts know him, too.
"The kid is the real deal," Bahhur said. "You are talking about an athletic receiver; he has some moves."
Jones will be on display this week at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.
Jones, from Lane College in Jackson, Tenn., is being billed as this season's Marques Colston. He's 6 feet 4, 208 pounds, and runs the 40-yard dash in 4.45 seconds.
Colston, a seventh-round pick last season by the Saints from Hosftra, went on to make most all-rookie teams.
Jones' presence on the NFL radar screen started to grow after he kept scorching Division I-A defensive backs at the Shrine Bowl all-star game.
"I got a chance to show my talents and let them know that I could play with Division I guys as well," Jones said via telephone from Indianapolis, where he's working out in preparation for the combine..........
