Saints Sign Cb Jason David From Colts

I don't think this rules out drafting a CB but does help us a bit to perhaps draft best player available.

Hopefully they won't match.

I think we were going to take the BPA approach regardless if we acquire David or not.

"It is expected to be the largest offer sheet signed during this offseason's free-agent signing period. "

Poison Pill? I am having a hard time swallowing it myself right now. Well I guess I have to waite for the details and get use to it.

Yeah you right. It gives us a whole lotta flexibility for the draft and makes BPA a likelihood.

This is great news !!! WHOAAAA

I think by next offseason, the league will implement something to detract teams from using the "poison pill". I do think he's going to be a Saint because of some type of poison pill.

I still believe the Saints will draft a man-to-man shut down type corner and have David as a nickle or dime type player. Can't ever have too many corners.

At 5-8, 180 he's kind of small, I just worry about those Tampa 2 guys fitting in a standard or blitzing man to man defence.

2007 Scouting Report - Scouts Inc.
Grade: 65 | Key
Alert: B

Comment:
David is a young experience player that is small in stature with good athletic skills. He has good speed and quickness for the DC position. He has been somewhat inconsistent in coverage. He has a quick pedal and he has smooth hips to transition and run with deep vertical routes. He doesn't play to his timed speed and struggles in his recovery ability down the field. He can plant, realign his hips/feet and drive on underneath routes. He has good reactive ability and body position to stay on the hip of the WR on short and intermediate routes. He has pretty good instincts in MM coverage and zone awareness. He has a bad tendency to peek in the backfield and get caught up off play action. He struggles to stay in phase vs. double moves. He has some closing burst and good ball skills underneath in short zones. He has good ball skills. As a run defender, he has the willingness to insert into ball carriers but is not very effective. He is not a good tackler and will go low on ball carrier. He needs to be more consistent as a tackler when forcing from an outside-in position in run support. Overall, David is a 3rd/4th corner for some NFL teams with some value on special teams.

Is it my imagination or are defensive backs getting smaller while offensive receivers are getting huge? This guy might be a smarter and better corner than Thomas, but he'll get smoked by guys who are over half a foot taller!
