Shanle has the good size and athleticism to make a roster next summer and his fine workout at a pro day may earn him a late draft selection. He shows good instincts and is rarely out of position, showing the ability to bring strong tackling skills to his club. He played mainly zone coverage and rarely was matched up in man situations. He has a strong frame and will hit and is probably more effective in the box.

His lack of good change of direction skills have led him to play soft in coverage and break down poorly in the open field. His range is good and he can play in the cover-2 scheme but must show better initial reads to make plays on the ball. He has fairly good measureables for the safety position, though his basic technique from backpedal to plant and drive technique will need extensive work.

Shanle is an adequate performer who we give a make-it grade. His instincts are only adequate, and he will have to find a niche to survive a training camp. He has the measureables to be a fine gunner on coverage units, and shows the toughness and consistent tackling to compete for that role. His triangle numbers were strong, but his football skills need to improve to make a roster.

Shanle (6-1, 212) ran both of his 40s in 4.40, the short shuttle in 4.09 and the three-cone drill in 6.80. He also had a 38½-inch vertical jump, a 9-foot-11 broad jump and 16 lifts.

2006 (Senior)


Andrew Shanle was a reliable player in Nebraska’s defensive backfield during his first season as a starter at free safety in 2006. One of the fastest Huskers, Shanle made several big plays in 2006 on NU’s path to the Big 12 North Division title, culminating an extremely productive Nebraska career.

The St. Edward, Neb., native started 13 games and finished the year with 57 tackles, including 41 solo stops. Shanle led Nebraska with four interceptions, including two in a victory against Kansas, and he also added seven breakups to help Nebraska rank among the Big 12’s leaders in pass efficiency defense. Shanle’s four interceptions were the fourth-best total in the conference.

Often featured in the blitz game, Shanle was also one of only six Huskers with at least four quarterback hurries. In addition to his two interceptions against Kansas, Shanle had a pick against Troy and set up Nebraska’s lone touchdown with an interception against Oklahoma in the Big 12 title game.

2005 (Junior)
Shanle appeared in all 12 games as a reserve safety and special teams contributor as a junior and finished with 10 tackles. He posted five tackles in NU’s first three games with two against Maine, an assisted tackle against Wake Forest and two stops against Pitt. He added an assisted tackle against Texas Tech, before contributing a solo stop in NU wins over Kansas State and Colorado to close the regular season. He capped the year with two solo stops and outstanding punt coverage in the win over Michigan in the Alamo Bowl.

His performance on Nebraska’s punt coverage team helped the Huskers rank second nationally in net punting. He also assisted on a much-improved punt return team that finished 17th nationally in return average.

2004 (Sophomore)
Shanle played in all 11 games as a reserve in the secondary, and as a member of most of Nebraska's special teams units. He finished with 19 total tackles, including 16 solo stops. He also had two tackles for loss, and recorded a 10-yard sack against Kansas State. Shanle played the majority of the game against the Wildcats with Josh Bullocks out with an injury, and responded with a career-high seven tackles.

Shanle also recovered a pair of fumbles (Missouri, Kansas State) and blocked a punt in NU's 24-3 victory over Missouri. Shanle burst through the line on a second-quarter punt attempt for a block that was scooped up for a score by teammate Adam Ickes. Later in the game, Ickes caused a fumble on a Tiger punt and Shanle recovered deep in MU territory. The Huskers converted to take a comfortable 17-3 lead.

Now this might be a very good Special team signing.

I remember us talking about him prior to the draft... I also wanted him in the later rounds. I'm happy it all worked out the way it did... we still got him.

In all honesty, the CB from Texas College has a better shot at making the practice squad than the kid from Rutgers. I also think Dyakowski has to fight an uphill battle. I dont see him sticking around too long.

Dyakowski is going to be a good football player one day. He's smart, but lacks playing experience. He held his own in his 1 year of playing experience in the SEC.
