New Football League?

If Mark Cuban's involved he'll find a way to screw it up anyway:

Stories like this pretending to be sports news just make the off season seem longer

ScottyRo 05-30-2007 08:02 PM

It would seem to me that if you wanted to break into professional sports you would choose a sport that isn't dominated by the biggest sports corporation in the world supported by such a huge fanbase.

I'd rather take on the MLB or the NBA where their leagues are truly being run into the ground.

Good point--
and how much football talent is truly left out there? It's not like a 12 man NBA roster.

Maybe with the NFL tightening their conduct rules, the UFL thinks that more players would be available- Ricky, Pac-man, the Vick brothers, Rae Carruth, Tank, Antonio Bryant, the Bengals...

I do not know how much is left but they did make a good point about the USFL. You never know. They got the money I say go for it. It may work to the level that it bring a minor league structure to the nfl here in the states. Think it would be nice if in ten years they prove themselves and join in with NFL europe. That would allow us to see some of the players we have over there and give the nfl the world wide base the want so bad. Without sending NFL teams overseas to sell the product. just a thought.

Tobias-Reiper 05-31-2007 05:40 PM

The problem with this new plan is that they want to compete with the NFL, not compliment it. The USFL was doing well until they decided to financially go head to head against the NFL by luring players with multi-million dollar contracts, and the USFL went bankrupt.

This planned new league is not only proposing to compete against the NFL by playing games during Fall-Winter, but also proposing to compete with High School and college football, playing games on Fridays and saturdays, and that's just plain dumb.

I think that a league that fills the May-July football drought could be successful, as long as is not a "clown league" like the XFL, which would've succeeded should McMahon would've not "wrestlerized" it. Doesn't even have to be NFL caliber football, just decent football.

Without big names, they'll never make it. Like stated before, they'll have to get the criminals at first. And, if they can survive long enough, they'll eventually be able to pull a super star or two... if they don't go bankrupt trying.

This is America and, if there's no big names, we just don't care. Hell, no one watches the NHL and it's the ONLY league. It's tough to hold a successful professional league in any sport in this day and age.

For the record, I'm one of the few that love hockey. WAR DUCKS!

Wait! The NHL is still around? Why aren't the games on TV?

Personally, I'm cool with the NFL being complemented by the AFL. It's different enough from the NFL product without being too gimmicky. Plus, if there was really more demand for football in fall/winter than supply, wouldn't people just watch the CFL?

They are on TV. Versus (the new television sports network) covers most of them and CBS or NBC is covering the finals along with Versus. I imagine that if you had a local team, you could watch them on your local channels. I love the Blackhawks, but they haven't been worth a crap since the early 90's. My 2nd team is Anaheim, so it's not like I can catch many regular season games. Versus covered the playoffs extremely well, though. Playoff hockey this year was nothing short of incredible.

The NHL has a horrible marketing crew. For instance, the ONLY size jersey you can buy is an XL and they cost right around $100.00. Now, I understand that jerseys are supposed to be big, but I could NEVER even come close to fitting in an extra large. I'm not paying $100.00 for a bed sheet. Unfortunately, that's all they offer unless you buy childrens-sized jerseys. They need a new campaign or something. Because, beside myself, I only know two other guys in the state that give a crap about hockey. One of them didn't even watch a game all season.

It's pathetic. And, all these people thinking about going against the NFL should really take this into consideration.

WhoDat205 06-01-2007 01:43 PM

Yeah, I know. It was a poor attempt at being funny.

Excuse me for getting off the subject, but I was living in Tampa when the Lightning won the Cup. My first live hockey game was the first game of the eastern conference finals against the flyers. I was immediately hooked and watched every minute of every game for the rest of the playoffs. The NHL had made a fan out of a dyed in the wool SEC football lovin' Mississippi boy who's never worn skates. I couldn't wait for the next season...and it didn't come. After the strike, I swore off hockey (like a lot of fans) and moved on to soccer.

I just hope athletes and owners in other leagues see what happened to hockey and before that, baseball. Could you imagine an NFL strike? I would go insane! And the NBA would be finished if they striked (struck?).

something that could put arena ball out of business would be welcome to me....Arena ball blows...We all know it...

BoudinSandwich 06-04-2007 03:07 AM

I want to get behind the VooDoo and support our local teams, but Arena Football is too painful to watch. It's garbage... probably only fun if you're playing. I can't watch an entire game. Maybe I'm just ignorant?
