Positions of Need

There's no question the team has added deapth at several spots. But as it stands right now after the Clancy signing, what are the weakest spots on the roster?

I think for defense it's still CB. One injury to the Predator or David and the team is in serious trouble. That would mean Young, Jones or Toast would have to start.

On Offense, it's gotta be wide receiver. After Colston, I don't see a serious #2 receiver on the roster. Meachum? Rookie and Injured (already). Henderson? Deep threat, but not a every down, across the middle guy. Copper? Just dosen't have starter talent. Patten? Ditto

Patten? Ditto?

Lets hope he has recovered and stays healthy. The good thing is he rehabed most of the 06 season. I am not going repeat my faith in him as a player again. I am not so worried about WR. We did it without Joe in 06 and that core group is back with some nice additions.
The OL is still a puzzle for me.

The CB is going to be a concern for sure. Any position going through a youth movement is. But you have to role the dice sometime and this year CB is the postion . But then again you have look at the returning starters and the additions as a whole. We are better off this year than last in case of injury.

LB and S is still an area of concern to me.

IMO, it's still too early to say. But, have you seen the press on rookie CB draftees U. Young and D. Jones?? Payton seems to be very impressed with their skills. www.neworleanssaints.com

As for WR, I think we have more than enough depth. Hopefully Meach will have the time he needs to recover completely and contribute later in the season. "A serious #2"?? How about ALL of the guys you named...
We need guys who can stretch the D: Devery.
We need under guys: T. Copper/D. Patten/L. Moore.
Promising Rookies: Meach and Rhema McKnight
Don't forget the blossoming TE's and the addition of E. Johnson.

Wait, and there's one more gem we've got who can "do it all" Reggie. I would like to predict now that he will throw at least one TD this year. :handguns:

I agree with your assessment at wideout. Lots of quantity, but...
I hope Patten stays healthy and Meachem comes around.

As for Henderson, this has got to be make-or-break: he is heading into year 4 with 54 career catches. He needs to tighten up his routes and hold onto the football. He is becoming the master of the 'almost' spectacular catch.

My concern is backup QB. We have a guy old as me (almost), an undrafted rookie and a guy that couldn't stay on the roster last year. Not exactly something that makes me comfortable.

ScottF 06-08-2007 08:49 AM

Good point- forgot about QB.

I agree with you, but I don't think Payton does.

He's had Martin through 2 off seasons and 1 regular season, and really hasn't brought anyone in, except McPherson. He must be happy with Martin.

Martin is proven he is a reliable back up. If Drew goes done we are pretty much done for just like 95% of the teams in the NFL. Martin can keep us the playoffs but the SB? Heck phili could not do it.

I agree with the QB assement, but who is backing up Fujita and Shanle?
We have young players at CB and WR, where are the young LBs?
I still think we have a problem at TE, at least a pass catching TE. Eric needs to stay healthy or we lose that pass catching threat over the middle.

I'm not to worried about the CB position, by the time mini camp is over, a few of these youngsters will be ready just in case something happens. As far as the backup QB position goes, I think in Payton's offense Jaime Martin will be fine, we may need another young kid to throw in the mix. Since the Clancy signing my concerns have shifted over to depth at the LB positions(plural), we are a injury or two from total disaster, I think at some point they'll going to pick up somebody. And last but not lest, I'm kind of skeptical of the TE position, I really like EJ's potential in this offense, but his past injury problems have me a lil on guard. So I guest we're like everybody else in the league, stay healthy and you have a chance to be victorious, get a few injuries and you can fall back to the pack, but I do believe we're in a lot better shape than we have been in the past. I mean last year we overcame a bunch of injuries to key personnel and made to the NFC Championship game, so I think we'll be O.K.
