A Lil Something To Make Your Mouth Water......

by WWL and NOPF's Kenny Wilkerson

They will have about six weeks off before heading to camp in Jackson. And, of course, the big thing for most of the players is going to be to stay in the shape they are in right now.

I say that because it's too bad they can't play a game right now. This is a team that is in excellent shape, and it’s a team hitting on all cylinders. They are very sharp and crisp on offense, and have shown they are a defense that is going to constantly attack the passer and harass the receivers.

The work done in the off season to get bigger and stronger has been outstanding, and it is hard to not notice just how many players look so different from just six months ago.

I will say that while last years off season was overshadowed with the introduction of Reggie Bush, this years off season has been a bit overshadowed with the news surrounding first round draft choice Robert Meachem.

First he showed up overweight, then he twisted his ankle, then he aggravated a previous injury from a few years back when he got (what is called in football language) a "meniscus.” To you and I, that means he had a little piece of cartilage loose in his knee. Surgery has now been done, and Meachem should be ready to practice come July 26th. The key word being “should.”

Let's all hope he does, and for this young man’s sake, I hope he does. After talking to him in the locker room after the surgery, you couldn't help but feel bad for him. He was physically hurting, as well as mentally, because he knows he's letting everybody down.

It is quite a contrast from last year when Reggie came in, dazzled everyone and went about his business like a ten year veteran. But, other than the Meachem soap opera, you would have to say this years off season has been smooth, it has been effective and I think it is very safe to say that yes this team is better than the one that left Soldier Field back in January.

I mentioned Reggie, and would like to take a moment to tell you more about him as well as other players that stood out.

When it comes to Reggie, (and I know it may be hard to believe), he is faster, and not by just a little. He shoots through gaps now unlike anybody I have ever seen. He will be something else to watch this year.

Drew Brees’ arm is stronger, his knowledge of the playbook is beyond last year, but, most importantly, this is Drew Brees' team. Period. End of story. Hands down, he is the leader of this team, and everyone knows it. There are a bunch of leaders spread throughout, but there is one "godfather,” and it's Brees.

Deuce McAllister looks sharp, has lost weight, is cutting very well and on a dime and is showing great top end speed.

Marques Colston is, without question, the number one receiver. The nickname he got last year was "smooth.” This year, it will be "smoothie." Colston looks and acts like another ten year vet. He plays hard, and is trying to also be the leader of the receivers. That might be a tough task, but he's trying. No matter what, he still is the best receiver on this team. He even has changed his stance to get off the ball quicker. Colston is going to go places in this league

The early reports on Devery Henderson were good, if not great. But, in my opinion, he kind of came back to the pack recently. Not because of what he does on the field, but his attitude is not one of a starter. He says things like, "well, if I start that's great, but…" There should be no buts. David Patten comes in and says being anything else other than a starter is unacceptable. Until Devery gets that, he won't get it.

Charles Grant has "brought it” every day. It may be all he needed was the money, and he may be one of those guys that turns it up rather then level off once they get a big contract. We'll find out during the season; but, Charles is in charge.

Jason David has been a very strong addition to the secondary. Has a nasty, aggressive approach to the game and attacks his receiver.

Roman Harper looks good as new.

These are just some of the key players, as well as some of the additions to this team. As we get close to camp, we'll give you a rundown on the entire roster and previews of what to expect.

Can you believe we are so close to camp? So close to another season. So close to another possible run to the playoffs. I, for one, can't wait for it all to get underway. Because I won’t be able to start forgetting that championship game until the Saints play a game that counts and win it.

Man I can't wait for training camp to start. Next stop SUPERBOWL!

Man, Blacksaint, you got my mouth watering now, too!

I keep hearing about how Reggie has gotten faster & quicker -- sounds unbelieveable. I can't wait to see how that goes. I hope he gets out of the gate on better footing than last year . . . especially with that leg injury snafu at the beginning of the year.

I'm also hoping that everyone is right about Jason David -- besides the battle for WR and DT, I'm extremely excited and curious about how the D-Backs are going to fall into place, both at CB and Safety. Sometimes, though, along with progress, you have vets fall by the wayside. I've always liked Fred T. (even though his play fell off drastically after his injury last year - before that, you and I both cheered him on) and Steve Gleason (may not be able to catch up from his injury with all of the competition at S).

But I'm with you -- I can't wait! That's why I schedule my vacation for the first week of training camp every year!!!

reggie has always been fast.........
in college he was gone once he turned on the jets.......
his problem in the pros is his hesitation to hit the holes.....
he runs side to side looking for one......
hopefully he has learned the patience of waiting for one to develope or shooting one that opens for that split second...in either case, he should turn on the jets and be gone, and that number 25 should be seen on a lot of prime time moments..............

that is just mean. the rest of this kids quote was part of he only wanted to help the team in any kind of way possible, or something close to that. thats the talk of a team player, a good characterized team player, is much better than a guy who wants it for himself. people just dont wanna give in and give devery a chance. he comes in, works hard, and does well, and now he has to make some crap up to keep himself happy, cause he feels henderson cant play #2. what an ediot?
