MRI on Colston shows no damage
Wide receiver's right knee has bothered him since game against Pittsburgh Tuesday, August 21, 2007By Jimmy Smith
Saints receiver Marques Colston said Monday a second MRI exam performed on his sore right knee Sunday revealed no structural damage.

Still, he is unsure if he will play Thursday night against Kansas City in the team's fourth exhibition game.

"If this was the regular season, I'd be able to play, but I think the coaches just want to take precautionary (measures) and keep me out," Colston said
Colston said he first noticed a problem with the knee during or after the Saints' first exhibition game against the Pittsburgh Steelers at the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio.

"Something has been going on since Pittsburgh," he said. "That's when it first occurred. I've just been trying to push through it and push through it, but I just kind of have to see the big picture."

Colston said he first underwent an MRI exam in Jackson, Miss., during the team's training camp, though he never missed a practice. Therefore the Saints never mentioned any injury problem with Colston's knee.

He fully participated in the two practices against Cincinnati last Thursday but rested Friday and did not play against the Bengals on Saturday night.

"It's just a little sore from the wear and tear of the camp," Colston said, repeating what he said Friday. "Nothing major."

Colston said Sunday's MRI revealed, "nothing structurally wrong with the knee. I've just got to wait it out."

SHIFTY SIMONEAU: Middle linebacker Mark Simoneau was coy Monday about the right knee or shin injury he sustained in the game against the Bengals.
"I'm not sure exactly what happened," Simoneau said of the injury that sidelined him after the first quarter.

He was seen on the sideline with the knee and shin wrapped in ice, but he did not come back out of the locker room after halftime.

"I'm not going to comment on it," Simoneau said. "We'll take it day by day. It's nothing, really."

Simoneau didn't appear to be favoring the knee Monday.

AN NBA GIFT: Several players, including quarterback Drew Brees and tailbacks Deuce McAllister and Reggie Bush, received Detroit Pistons jerseys bearing their numbers, compliments of Pistons president of basketball operations and Saints fan Joe Dumars.

Dumars spoke to the team during training camp at Millsaps College.

BAKER ASSESSMENT: Quarterback Matt Baker, who played the last quarter of Saturday's game at Cincinnati, said, other than a difficult first series, he thought the rest of his night "went pretty well.

"I was just expecting to play the fourth quarter," he said. "I think Jamie had the first play in the fourth (a touchdown run by Antonio Pittman), and I got the rest."

Baker led the Saints to a 23-yard Olindo Mare field goal, but said he wasn't sure his effort was enough to make him a player in the race with Tyler Palko and Jason Fife for the third quarterback spot .

"I guess that's something for the coaches to decide," Baker said. "I thought I played all right."

TODAY'S WORK: The Saints are scheduled to practice twice at their Airline Drive facility, after having a day off from the practice field Monday.
