Saints/Dolphins thoughts

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; The last time I can remember a shutout was sometime around '90 or '91. We played the Raiders at the dome on a Monday Night and beat them 23-0....

I hope the Mare thing is not a trend. A lot of people here in Miami were a bit frustrated with him.

Actually it was three... two clanked off the goal posts, the other was wide right... (missed from 33, 55, and 50)

I guess he's not use to the artificial surface yet...

Re: Saints/Dolphins thoughts

I must say, Jamie Martin and Tyler Palko made me keep my mouth shut last night as far as what I've been saying about them (anti-Martin, pro-Palko). Chris Reis was a nice surprise, wish we could have seen a little more from him this preseason, but probably will get cut because numbers are against him. Pierre Thomas did great, but that was no big surprise. 2nd string O-line looked better than normal (though the Dolphins might have had something to do with that). And yes, the Mare deal was terrible. I know 2 of those missed FG's were 50+ yards. But dude, you are a kicker in the National Football League. You get paid a ton of money to do nothing but kick the ball. You should not be missing 3 FG's in a row. ESPECIALLY not one from 33 yards. He's very consistent with kickoffs, but it looks like we might have to use up that extra roster spot anyway if we wanna make some field goals.

I can see it now, Saints down by 2 points against the defending champion Indianapolis Colts, Mare's set up at the 20 yard line with 3 seconds left on the clock...and it hits the goal post.

I agree missing 3 kicks are concerning but consider last year we probably would have only attempted 1 of them. Turf could be a factor but he better make the adjustments.

*sigh* Sean Payton and his obsessive offensive mind.

Touchbacks trumps field goals made? In his mind, it is apparently worth the risk.

I really hope Mare does well in pressure situtations. Cause we're stuck with him.

So Mare has one bad preseason game out of five, and everyone is ready to get rid of him already?

....Okay.....

Good point. However, with the offense we have, we'd better not be playing for field goals, touchdowns are what they play for. Like Budsdrinker said, two of those would never have been attempted last year with Carney. I liked Carney but he had lost his leg strength. Billy Whatshisname couldn't hit his butt with both hands. Mare will be ok. At least I hope so. Give him some time to get used to the field and the turf. He's better than we might have gotten.

I found an interesting article in regards to Mare.

Dante Hall, Devin Hester, Eddie Drummond, National Football League - CBSSports.com

For the 2006 season, NFL teams averaged 2.4 punts per game and 3.9 kickoff returns per game. Double that up since it is special teams on both sides and you get 4.8 and 7.8. That makes 12.6 plays per game for punts and kickoffs, not counting touchbacks. As for kicking to score, teams averaged 1.8 field-goal attempts per game last season and 2.2 extra-point attempts a game. Double those and you get 3.6 and 4.4 for eight kicks per game.
I would guess that is Paytons reasoning for the Mare pick up. That and he only takes up one position rather than two.
That said, if Mare loses a game or more because of his less than perfect feild goal percentage, this article can go to the blazes.

Re: Saints/Dolphins thoughts

I thought this from the article was good too. I missed it the first time.
Here's a novel approach: Punt the damn ball out of bounds, kick it off into the end zone -- and blow somebody out.
