Cool Inside the Locker Room with Reggie Bush

Saints running back Reggie Bush can look back on the two meetings with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from his rookie season with mixed feelings. Running the ball out of the backfield, the Bucs bottled up the shifty runner, holding him to just 18 yards, while he caught 15 passes against the NFC South rival.

And then there was the matter of that punt return. Bush's first NFL touchdown came on an electrifying 65-yard punt return to hand the Saints a victory in the first of the teams' two games, coming in October at the Superdome. Bush spoke Thursday about what he sees ahead for this Sunday's matchup.

Q: Last time you played the Buccaneers you had 11 carries for minus 5-yards. Do you look back on that game and see what they did, and try and improve?

A: We use the tape from last year to look at some of the things they did to stop our run game. We try to focus on bettering ourselves and learning from our mistakes.

Q: Do you look at it the things that you saw that you might have done wrong in that game personally after watching film, because their defense is pretty similar to last years?

A: They made some key additions this year on defense with Jeremiah Trotter, Cato June, and they still have Derrick Brooks and Ronde Barber and they got that young boy Gaines Adams. So, I am pretty sure their defense is going to be as good as, if not better than last year. We are expecting nothing short of a fight. They will probably be looking for some revenge from last year, after serving them two losses. We’re definitely expecting a fight and a good game.

Q: Drew Brees talks a lot about finding that rhythm, and that was kind of the biggest regret in the Colts game, that the offense never got into a rhythm. Was that also the case for you personally, that you were never able to get started?

A: I think that it is pretty important for us to right away establish the rhythm and tempo with our offense and we were never able to get into that last game so we really want to focus on that early in this game and hopefully that will carry us through the game and we will come out with a win.

Q: You talked about patience being the biggest thing for you. Was that hard to practice in the first game that had so much built up time?

A: Yes in a sense. It was a big game but, a lot of things didn’t go right for us, it wasn’t just one thing. There was a lot of things we didn’t do right, and a lot of mistakes we made. We did some good things and bad things. We have a lot to improve on. Hopefully we will be able to do that and win this game.

Q: whenever they put the game plan together they use you in a lot of different ways. Do you think they change the way they use you depending on the defense? Like for example, Tampa Bay runs mostly a cover 2.

A: We game plan our offense according to what the defense runs. Certain things you can run against certain defenses. So it’s not really just me but our offense in general. It’s the way we game plan. But at the same time I am still used in numerous positions. I will split out wide, running back, all the different things. It may change in the type of plays but the variety is still the same.

Q: You can get the feeling this week while talking in that locker room that this team is hungry to get back on that field. Do kind of feel the same way? How hungry is this team?

A: I think every one in here is hungry to get back on that field. Because they know we sold ourselves short last week in that game and that wasn’t the team that we know we are. We didn’t play like we know how to. That’s one of the toughest ways to lose a game. Not to lose, but to lose when you know you didn’t play up to your abilities. That’s what made it tough for us, so we are looking for a great performance out of our players this game.

Q: It has been a long time for you personally where you have had one of those games where you have been limited to few yards. Was that frustrating for you to deal with?

A: It was a little frustrating. The fact that we didn’t put up any points on offense is even more frustrating. The whole game was frustrating for us. we need to have a short term memory but also use it as motivation for the next few games coming up.

Q: Obviously you are not too worried in general about this offense?

A: I know what we are capable of and the caliber of athletes we have on our team and we know what we can do that’s why everyone is a little frustrated about that game, it wasn’t that we lost but it was the fashion that we lost. We didn’t play to our abilities.

Q: Do you think you took it a little harder than other guys or was it kind of collective?

A: I hope not. I hope everyone was just as mad.
