Titans Keys For Success

1. Send wide receiver Brandon Jones deep. Jones is now the Titans' top receiving threat, and when he is lined up over smaller Saints cornerback Jason David [5-8] this week, he needs to take him deep. Jones has both the speed to get behind David and the size (6-1, 212) to beat him on jump balls. Off the snap, Jones can use his strength to power past David, and with the strong-armed Vince Young airing it out, Jones can beat both David and over-the-top safety help from Roman Harper to effectively stretch the Titans' passing attack. Jones can have the same success the Colts' Reggie Wayne and the Buccaneers' Joey Galloway did in the first two weeks.

2. Blitz Keith Bulluck. Bulluck is one of the NFL's most underrated linebackers. He has the length to hold up tight end Eric Johnson off the line of scrimmage, and also the quickness and speed to cover Reggie Bush out of the backfield.

Another of Bulluck's best attributes, however, is his blitzing prowess. By sending him off the edge, he will meet either Bush or Deuce McAllister, and he can beat either back to get to Drew Brees. Bulluck has a good dip move and a quick slap and swim to get past blockers and finish plays.

3. Keep on running. Although the Titans do not have a dominant top back, the committee of LenDale White and Chris Brown has been effective in moving the chains. The Titans need to pound the ball at the heart of the Saints' defense behind center Kevin Mawae and guards Jacob Bell and Benji Olson. They can overpower defensive tackles Brian Young and Kendrick Clancy, leaving White or Brown man-to-man in the hole against tough but smallish middle linebacker Mark Simoneau.

1. Pound the ball on the ground. Although McAllister is dinged up, the Saints still have enough supporting pop with Bush and third-string back Aaron Stecker to run the ball effectively against the Titans. Running behind monster left tackle Jammal Brown and left guard Jamar Nesbit, the Saints' rushing attack can pick up good yardage against undersized end Kyle Vanden Bosch. Additionally, power-blocking fullback Mike Karney can lead well against outside linebacker David Thornton and leave the fleet-footed Bush man-to-man in the hole against overmatched Titans middle linebacker Ryan Fowler.

2. Use the tight end more in the passing game. Both Johnson and Billy Miller are good receivers and need to be used more in that capacity. By hitting Johnson and Miller over the middle with quick hitches and speed outs, it will keep Thornton and Bulluck from expanding their coverage responsibilities quickly and leave the hash-to- numbers area open for passes to wide receivers Marques Colston and Lance Moore. Passes to the tight end also are easy reads for Brees and will allow the Pro Bowl quarterback to get back into the rhythm he was in last season.

3. Spy Young. Young uses his legs to escape pressure and is a threat to make a backbreaking run once he is in the open field. The Saints need to use the speedy Simoneau as a spy to track Young all game long and keep him from breaking containment for big gains. This will take an extra defender out of the Saints' coverage, but by limiting Young as a runner and making him win the game with his arm, the Saints have the advantage.
