Saints and NFL want families to play more
Don Ames Reporting
The NFL and the
Saints today announce "NFL Play 60", a national campaign aimed at getting kids and families active for at least 60 minutes a day.
A group of local third and fourth graders will get to workout with
Saints players as part of the kickoff event this morning. The NFL is launching the program in New Orleans, but some of the elite players from across the NFL are involved.
Hall of Famer Michael Haynes, now NFL Vice-President of Player and Employee Development, says a number of big name players are helping encourage kids and their parents to "get up and play an hour a day." He says it features "Tom Brady of the Patriots, Steven Jackson of the Panthers, Tony Romo of the Cowboys and Reggie Bush in New Orleans."
Officials with NFL Play 60 say studies show that nearly 31 percent of children and teens in America are either overweight or at risk of becoming overweight.
In New Orleans, Haynes says they'll renovate the Lakeview Playground, destroyed by Katrina. "We're going to be out building playgrounds and fun centers for kids."
